It sounds as though the power unit has failed

First guess would be a power issue - check the socket/extension cord is OK, but it's more likely the power supply is gone, especially if the machine is older (or was recently upgraded to beyond the supply's capacity). You can buy a new PSU online or on the high street and try replacing it (it's not that hard) but a local computer repair shop (if you have one) might be a better bet since they can check if it is the supply, and replace it for you if you're not comfortable in a computer's innards.

if the socket/extension it would not show a light ... lets see if caroline replies first of all;)

yes, tried and checked all sockets/extensions, they seem fine, guess it could well be the psu gone. any ideas how much this is? am pretty good with coputers so should be able to replace it myself.xx

Before buying a PSU, you should really make sure it isn't the motherboard. When you opened the case did you notice any components on the board leaking or bulging? Ideally you'd test it with another PSU that you knew worked, but unless you know anyone willing to lend you theirs for a bit you won't be able to.

Assuming you've tested the socket with another appliance, and swapped the mains lead to ensure it's not the fuse, then a dead or failing PSU is probably the cause. 30 minute job on a PC, any generic ATX PSU of the same or higher rating will be OK (unless it's a Dell, some of which require bespoke PSU's).
    400W PSU's cost from £20 upwards.
If it's completely dead, and the case fans don't spin up, I'd say that's the most likely issue.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
