hi, having problems trying to start my p.c. up... the start button on tower goes on for a split second and than it just goes dead and the blue light goes out, at the same time, the monitor light goes from green to amber in a split second, and then just stays like that. nothing is working at all, checked all leads and connections, cleaned everything, opened up tower, no loose connections, its just totally dead, my sons laptop runs off my connection, wi fi, and his laptop still works, mines still dead, anybody got any suggestions please as im pulling my hair out.xx

It sounds as though the power unit has failed

The power supply unit may have had it?Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0

First guess would be a power issue - check the socket/extension cord is OK, but it's more likely the power supply is gone, especially if the machine is older (or was recently upgraded to beyond the supply's capacity). You can buy a new PSU online or on the high street and try replacing it (it's not that hard) but a local computer repair shop (if you have one) might be a better bet since they can check if it is the supply, and replace it for you if you're not comfortable in a computer's innards.0

hi thanks for your advice, there is no beeps or any noise at all. sons laptop screen is as usual, all well, tried pressing buttons on keyboard also, nothing at all happens, just gone dead.xx0

yes, tried and checked all sockets/extensions, they seem fine, guess it could well be the psu gone. any ideas how much this is? am pretty good with coputers so should be able to replace it myself.xx0

thanks, will look on your link now,and also price them up.thankyou.xxx0

Before buying a PSU, you should really make sure it isn't the motherboard. When you opened the case did you notice any components on the board leaking or bulging? Ideally you'd test it with another PSU that you knew worked, but unless you know anyone willing to lend you theirs for a bit you won't be able to.0

Assuming you've tested the socket with another appliance, and swapped the mains lead to ensure it's not the fuse, then a dead or failing PSU is probably the cause. 30 minute job on a PC, any generic ATX PSU of the same or higher rating will be OK (unless it's a Dell, some of which require bespoke PSU's).
400W PSU's cost from £20 upwards.
If it's completely dead, and the case fans don't spin up, I'd say that's the most likely issue. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
