Sales calls from Talk Talk & Eon after bogus survey

I usually politely decline any and all sales and marketing calls from companies (we rarely get any as we are registered with the TPS and are ex-directory), but I foolishly made the mistake of not doing so last week. I was called from a call centre that I believe was in India and was asked to fill in a short customer survey that I was lead to believe was being carried out by Cancer Research. I have fundraised for them in the past and so agreed to the short survey. It was basic stuff--asking what companies I have the phone, internet, energy bills and insurance with, I didn't need to give out any personal details. However, at the end of the call I asked again who was carrying out the survey and was told that it was Talk Talk with Cancer Research. I must admit the line was REALLY bad, so it was hard to understand what the guy was saying.

We hardly ever get sales calls, and this week I have received calls from both Talk Talk and Eon trying to sell me their services. The Talk Talk caller was INCREDIBLY rude, when I told him I wasn't interested he was very unpleasant. I asked him to remove me from the marketing lists and he hung up. I was tonight called by an Eon sales person who asked for me by name and was pushy also very rude when I said I wasn't interested. I asked where he got my number and he said "don't you remember doing the Consumer Research Bureau survey?" I told him I had not permitted anyone to use my details for marketing purposes, asked him to remove me from any marketing lists and he also hung up on me.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I have looked up the Consumer Research Bureau and found nothing relevant, in fact I can't find any such organisation in the UK. I can also find no evidence of Talk Talk carrying out surveys for Cancer Research. I would like to get to the bottom of who got my details, I'm very concerned they have been sold on to third parties as I have never had contact with Talk Talk or Eon before (and after their awful phone sales people, hope to never again).

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Not a lot you can do really. All it takes is to miss one tiny tick box and they're all over you like a tramp on chips.

Register with the Telephone Preference Service if you believe them to be unsolicited; http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Other than that there's little you can do.

I reported talk talk to information commissioner and TPS. I am sick and tired of this aggressive company and its marketing, I hope they get a heavy fine
  • Gordon, thank you. That was my concern, too. We are already registered with the TPS. I just wish I knew who made the original call so I could trace it and be more proactive about removing my details.

savemoney, if the calls continue I will do the same. I did request for them to remove my name from their marketing lists, but I don't hold out much hope. We'll see how it goes. I was mainly curious about the rather unscrupulous way in which my data was collected, I wish I knew what I'd filled in that gave my details in the first place.

I have a email from Talk talk dated March 2010 when they said they take me off there marketing list unfortunately I still get calls from them, this isnt the first time they have promised not to call me for past 2 years I have had calls and have had to buy truecall to filter out calls
  • Are you sure he didn't say consumer research and you misheard? Or deliberately made it sound more like cancer research than consumer research? Can't think of any reason why talk talk and cancer research would team up, or how cancer research would benefit from you giving information out about your utility companies.

It could be they sold the OP details on. Personnel data appears to be worth quite a bit of cash these days
