time syncing is built into windows, click on the clock icon and do a manual update sync, if it fails, change the time server and test again until you find one that works

to change the sync schedule, go into task scheduler and look for time sync

So restore it to factory settings, that will at least obscure any sensitive data, then restore all your stuff from your backup when it's returned.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Yeah it's the battery. Needs changing
Is this the only diagnosis? On start-up, my desktop reverts to 1.1.2002 no matter what I reset, so I dislodged the RAM and tried to start the PC; The BIOS beeps were crying out for RAM as loudly as ever. Does this mean my CMOS is OK? It is the original CMOS, nine years old.

I would think after all that time it's a good chance it's the cmos battery, and for the sake of £1 or so it's worth a go.

The battery is usually CR2300, can be bought in most £ shops.

Here's a wee video showing how, remember to disconnect power before starting.

So is the battery receiving charge each time the PC is powered up? I thought this type of battery is not rechargeable. If not, then the point I am making is can it really be the battery if it requires much more power to emit the beeps than to maintain a tiny amount of data.

    ZHi,

no the battery does not get a charge, it's the same battery as used in many gadgets.

  • But it's that battery which is powering the BIOS beeps and not the mains, right?
And what is your avatar supposed to be?? I can't make it out!

When connected to the mains or when a laptop battery is connected they will be used instead of the CMOS battery. The CMOS battery is only ever used when the computer has no power at all and does not provide any function apart from retaining the date and basic hardware information whilst the computer has no power source.

not very sure what it is, looks like a person walking quickly to left, or right?

Yes, the cmos is only a backup for when main power off.
