Resetting computor date?

My son has a Toshiba laptop with windows for about 3 years.For the las 2 weeks ,everytime he turns it on ,the date comes up at oct 31st 2006 and he has to reset it,but often windows wont let him.I s it a virus or is their a simple cure?

It will be the CMOS settings battery. Unfortunately you'll need to take it to bits to put a new one in. There will probably be a YouTube video of the proceudure.

If changing the CMOS battery seems too hard, or until you get round to it, you can use a software utility to automatically set the time/date every time the laptop connects to the internet: http://www.worldtimeserver.com/atomic-clock/

Thanks for the link to the clock...My DD's laptop, only 5 months old, needs a CMOS battery and I don't want to send it back to manufacturers, especially with a 2year warranty, for a simple job.

it depends if it's easily accessible - try and find a maintenance manual for your model to see where it is...

true, no good using the warranty to change what is basically a £2 watch battery

I've seen laptops where the battery is soldered to the board and in some cases the laptop will need almost complete dissassembly. I'd send it back under warranty if it was that new and I regularly take laptops apart. If you haven't done it before I wouldn't start now.
For the OP funnyguy of course I'd give the opposite advice since any warranty will long since have expired.

but, if you go into the guts of the lappy, will it not invalidate the warranty?

I believe some laptops might use the main battery for the CMOS these days? - only saying this as a friends Dell laptop had a faulty battery (the big battery that runs the laptop) and he kept losing the time and date everytime he switched it on (via mains, as the battery wasn't working)
