Hi, I'm looking for some free portable antivirus software. In case my terminology is wrong, I want something I can run from a memory stick to test a potentially infected PC without installing any software on the said PC. Is there such a thing? Any recommendations?
TIA

Any of the bootable antivirus solutions will work (https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/41650154#Comment_41650154) if you look up how to boot from USB. Sardu (multibootable CD/USB maker) is useful as not every bootable antivirus will work on every system (whether on CD or USB) so you can put them all together.0

Malware scanners that'll run while Windows is running:
Dr Web CureIt! (wants signup to get to program so use direct link, no install needed)

Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool 32-bit (no install needed)

Hitman Pro: Second Opinion Malware Scanner (very quick! no install needed)

Kapersky TDSSKiller (rootkit detector and remover - safer to just use as detector, as remove can make unbootable)
http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe
Norman Malware Cleaner (no install needed, takes time)

Kapersky Virus Removal Tool (needs install but uninstalls itself after use, slower)

Clamwin (full version ) is awful as a detection / protection tool. so i would think ditto its portable counterpart ///BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

Comodo Cleaning Essentials is in beta and does not have to be installed. Both the scanner and the killswitch (very useful tool) can be run from a stick.
Have a look on this thread for some links - http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=291248
1.6.something is the latest, but doesn't have DACS (that's still in 1.5.something)0 -
The Norman Malware Cleaner is completely portable and can be run on both on-line and off-line machines.
Please also be aware that the Malware Cleaner is updated daily and will need to be re-downloaded to ensure it contains the latest virus definitions.
To significantly improve scanning speed, please do the following:- Start the cleaner
- Choose Options
- Untick "Unpack archives"
- Click OK

I once created a pre-installed environment (i.e. a bootable installation of Windows XP on a CD-ROM) using Bart PE. I seem to remember using an antivirus, Spybot and some other tools.
Anyway, there seem to be quite a few better options. Have a look at the Google search below - the AVG rescue disk (result 2) looks promising:
