My wife got a letter this morning saying that a direct debit had not gone out because of insufficient funds and has been charged £35 .
after checking her account online it turns out she was 44p short .is it worth appealing to the bank for a refund of the £35.any suggestions would be welcome.

    You could try.

And in the future you could leave yourself a buffer of £50 or something so this doesn't happen in the future....

I would have thought a goodwill policy exists. No harm in asking.

I used to work for Yorkshire Bank, it may have changed since but back then there was nothing we (actual branch staff) could do to reverse charges like this. All we could do was give you sympathy and try to sell you on an agreed overdraft to save it happening again.

I quit, I'm not heartless enough to work in a bank :p

Your only chance would be to take it higher up I reckon, make them believe you can cause them enough grief to make it easier just to refund.

If this a genuine one- off error on your part then it might be worth contacting them and telling them, firmly yet politely, that unless they reconsider the charge, you will move your account.

I once lost a bank statement and asked for a replacement for which they were going to charge me several pounds. I threatened to move my account if I was charged and they sent me one for free! This only works however if you have a fairly blameless record with the bank, because they will want to keep your custom.

Branch staff where I work cant do it either, but telephone banking staff can. I am more than heartless enough to work there lol.

I had a similar issue to day due to a DD mix up, however in my case they paid the DD but charged me £50 for the privilege.

After a bit of ear bending the branch manager agreed to refunded £25 as goodwill and I will recover the rest from the company who messed up the DD. I could have recovered the full £50 from the other company so YB has gone up in my estimation today despite being initially really hacked off about the situation.

Now admittedly they haven't done it yet but my experience this afternoon is that the managers at least do have discretion at their disposal.
