Does mobile phone sat nav use the internet ?

Not being very mobile savvy I have a couple of questions.

I have a unlocked Nokia 5800 which uses Ovi maps and it seems to work very well (and which I don't believe uses the internet).

I am thinking of giving this phone to my OH who has an Orange sim which doesn't come with data - could she still use the Nokia sat nav in the car ?

I guess I am asking does my 5800 require the internet to make the sat nav work ?

Secondly I am thinking of getting either a Desire or a N8 but would like to know if they use the internet for the sat nav ?

I hope you understand what I am trying to ask !! Thank you.
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

It will use a tiny bit of data to help get the initial GPS fix, other than that, it uses nothing as the maps are stored on the phone/it's SD card.

As for your next phone, the Desire will use data for Google Navigation, but the N8 wont (OVI Maps again).

So would my OH's card (which doesn't have any data usage - just text and speech) work in the 5800 ?

    Thanks for your help rusty.

AFAIK, Nokia maps are preloaded to the handset and require only GPS signal without any data connection. However, I may be wrong as the table at the bottom of this page says the opposite ('ofline reliability'): http://www.google.co.uk/mobile/maps/

Google maps on Desire do require internet connection to load the maps dynamically. The recent version allows cashing a big part of the map in advance if you plan the route while on WiFi.

Yep sure would. You can use a PC load new/updated maps too.

Just to be safe though, make sure aGPS is disabled, just use GPS. Not that the tiny bit of data used by aGPS will cost much though.

You normally download the maps required via your PC and Ovi suite then install on the 5800 phone .
Navigation requires no internet but if you do not have mobile data switched off then it picks up a small amount . Cost dependant upon your contract .

Google maps takes map data from the server as you use it so Yes.

Offline mapping may be from memory /SD card such as NavFree, or Nokia Maps that will not use data.
