Staying in halls very rarely works out cheaper than renting privately, even after including bills. It was perfectly possibly to rent in the west end of Glasgow right in the student centre for £250 a month, with £300 being the most common.
As for getting a job, if you have to do it you have to do it. It's something that most students will have to face at some point.0 -

You have got to be kidding.
Student rents in Stirling are never lower, than £350 and I have friends who rent in Glasgow. Please tell me more, they would love you if they can get a rent in Glasgow for £250-300.0 -
I know a few folk living in Glasgow who pay £250 - £300 per month. It's sharing with a flatmate, not on their own but it's perfectly doable - just go take a look on the Rightmove website and you'll find lots of 2 bedroom flats in the City Centre for £500 per month.Debt: Started at £4780, now at £4190

Comp Wins 2014: None yet

I know plenty of people who rented in the west end for that price. All the big student areas and streets like Byres Rd, Partick, Maryhill Rd, Woodlands, etc. £250 would get you a single room, and £300 would get you a double.
Maybe it's because of the demand?0 -

I live in the West End of Glasgow, 5 minutes from the Glasgow Uni Campus. I rented out a room during my undergrad. Initially it was £250, by the 4th year I was charging £290. As it is so close to the campus there are no travelling costs, and we often used to come home for lunch.
Lots of my friends rent 2 bed flats 5-15 minutes walk from the uni, all in the range of £500 - £575 a month.
If your friends are paying more than £250 - £350 a month (dependant on location and niceness of flat) for a room I'd suggest they move as they're being ripped off!0 -

now i don't know the area, but i find your statement hard to believe having found a stack of properties in about 3 mins on google at under £350!:happyhear0 -
i don't understand why you have to get broadband from your uni? a shared house can get it for much cheaper all in. (and avoid buying coffee when you're out regardless of whether you're studying or not - it's a black hole of spending money!)GothicStirling wrote: »The issue is that in halls, the charge is inclusive of rent, heating and electricty. Then by living off campus they need to take in consideration broadband (my uni charges £20), travelling costs and buying lunch/coffees if you're used to returning to your flat after lectures.
Rent off campus is going to be £300-400 a month (+ holding deposit), heating and electricity, my broadband is £40 for three months, travelling costs £20 a month and plus add ons like lunch and coffee if I haven't made a packed lunch.:happyhear0 -
I've checked out a few flats around the uni campus, and the cheapest without any bills is £375
