I use skype (skypeout) alot when overseas, useful for sending SMSs but also calling home (ideally just a quick call to tell them to turn on the PC and fire up skype to make the call free).

Plus when in the UK it works out fairly cheap if I need to start making calls back to overseas from home at odd times when I can;t use the office phone.
  • I use the above mentioned cbfsms.com website, that seems to work well enough for me - though, can be a bit frustrating when you get the busy message - but as long as your message isn't urgent and you don't mind waiting a few minutes, its a good little site.

I find that +44 is sometimes needed rather than 0044

This is all too techie .

Log onto Argos and reserve something, putting the recipients phone number in the reservation. Argos will send them a free text saying the item is reserved for 24 hours. Then you just need to devise a code, something like:

A toaster = pick me up at 6.00pm
    A hot water bottle = 7.00pm
    An Power drill = 8.00pm...

Well you get the idea. Hey, they laughed when someone first suggested the Spitfire!

    Only kidding of course....
  • Just received the following email from 18185 after querying my inability to send a text yesterday
We are sorry but we no longer offer an sms service. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause you. We will be updating it on our website to reflect this to all customers shortly.

This service was always reliable and I used it frequently to send texts abroad. It's a great shame that it's gone. :(

Skype works well for this. For extra money, you can get a Skype In number too.
