XP Home Security alerts - help!

Hi all,
All of a sudden I keep getting security alerts from XP Home Security 2011 and it asks me to purchase a registered copy in order to rid my pc of virus intrusions.
It has scanned and apparently found 26 various problems.
What shall I do? Obviously I don't want to have my computer infected but at the same time I feel this could be a con from XP to get me to purchase their software?
And how do I stop the messages without having to pay?
Advice would be most helpful.
Thanks,
Tich

It is a con,
Download AVAST! free antivirus and register, download ADAWARE free to sort out your pop-ups. Use those 2 programs regularly and they will sort everything out.
You shouldn't pay for anti virus software ( Norton, Kaspersky etc.) unless you do a lot of money transactions online.0
