Refurbished Laptop - Problems

Hi - I apologise if this is a common thread but:
I purchased a netbook from Laptops Direct (online) for my daughter for Christmas and it had developed a fault - software/windows not loading.
Unfortunately it is now outside of the 90 day warranty and LD have stated that they are unable to help. Where does this leave me in regards to my consumer/statutory rights?
Regards...

Hi,
We have a techy board and the wise wizards there might be able to help you sort out the problem. So I'll move your post across there.
You can always come back here if you need to pursue your options further.

Software faults are unlikely to be covered under any warranty anyway.
Will it start in safe mode? (Accessed by tapping F8 on startup)Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

What is the fault? Can you describe it a bit more so we can see if we can help you out.."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0

Windows does not load up at all. I have tried to start it up in safe mode and every other mode there is but it keeps on returning to the black safe mode start up screen. Laptops Direct sent out 2 recovery disks but the nature of the fault meant that I could not load them.
Unfortunately, the fault occurred only after a couple of weeks of use. However, because I had ordered it in November (not used until Christmas) and by the time the disks arrived and the eventual return of the netbook back to LD (their advice) meant that the 90 day warranty had lapsed.
LD did not even send any correspondence with the returned netbook or give any reason why they had sent it back. It was only when I emailed them that they replied that the warranty had passed and they could not help me.
Waste of time...and a waste of money!!0 -
Are the recovery disks in CD format? And is it a netbook without an CD drive?
As stated, a software problem would never be covered by warranty anyway.
Probably best to start with malware removal / repairing windows installation. Pretty possible using bootable USB thumbdrives these days, e.g. AVG rescue
Failing that, borrow a hard drive caddy, take the hard drive out, back up any files you want kept from it, then wipe and reinstall the version of windows you have a license for. Should be possible with bootable usb drives again for XP or win7.Russia is HERE0 -

Id go and attempt a full reinstall of win 7 then as vyseyboy has said - with storing your stuff on hard drive first.."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0
