Problems With The BBC World Service ?

True! It's a cheap way of filling in four hours that R4 would otherwise have to provide programmes for. And some of it is quite interesting, when you can't sleep. But I miss the Radio 4 UK Theme...0

yes i know. i listen everyday to it on my car radio. i first thought my radio had gone but then found out from BBC website they HAVE STOPPED BROADCASTING END OF MARCH. can you believe it? so you can listen to bbc world sevice outside UK in FM, but you cant listen to it here on FM, LW or MW except at 1 AM or some ridiculous time in the morning. i think this is unbelievable. they must appreciate there's many people in UK who want to hear international news!! can we not start a twiter or facebook revolution?0

Just to put the cat amongst pigeons, the BBC's World Service was previously funded by HM Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Much of the BBC's overseas work is in gathering foreign intelligence, a costly business. Big Dave thought he would gift the cost of these activities to the television licence payer instead of the FCO.
However, the bill for the World Service is too huge to pass en totale to the licence payer. A big hike in the licence fee was out of the question, the hapless licence payer wouldn't have that, so hence the cuts.
Other areas of the BBC are under intense pressure as the licence fee revenues are purloined for other activities falling outside of the broadcaster's remit.
Many BBC local radio stations, for example, could close in 2014. BBC2 may go off the air during the daytime and the prized BBC2 daytime schedule, including Paul Martin's Flog It show, would be scrapped all together. And all BBC TV programming could cease after 10.30pm, except on Friday or Saturday, to allow for the occasional late film.
And no, April 1st was yesterday.0 -
