Could you give me an opinion on this one?

At the moment I ride a mountain bike, what differences would I notice?

Many thanks.

It maybe a little bit lighter with an alloy frame, Still has steel forks though.

Depends what you have now and what you want to use it for.

Very little difference, (thats guessing that you have a similar priced mountain bike) just put slick tyres on the mountain bike or get a proper road bike.

If you have a mountain bike why not put some thinner slick tyres on it. That's what I've done which makes my MTB perfect for on road commuting. However, I probably only go proper mountain biking a couple of times a year so it's not a major issue swapping the knobblies back on twice a year.
  • What do you intend to use it for ?

If its for communting then I would say it won't be very different to a mountain bike. Even with an alloy frame then steel forks, trouser guard and heavy wheel means no advantage over a mountain bike with slick tyres.

Save your money, what do you have at the moment ? If a mountain bike with a rigid fork or lockable suspension fork then you can use it for commuting with decent slicks, for example specialized fatboys 26x1.25. They will give a good turn of speed and reasonable punture resistance.

If its a commute longer than about 10 miles then look at a road bike, far faster and likely to be more comfortable. Under that and the cycling bug would really have to bite to make the expenditure worthwhile.

Depends on the mountain bike, cheap mountain bikes are more like hybrids anyway.

It's for commuting and off road at weekends. I currently have a Marin Pioneer Trail, with Schwalbe tyres (smoother than knobbly tyres but OK for off road as well).

I don't really see much of a difference between the 2 bikes. The Marin looks very nice, why not use that? I've always liked Marin Bikes, never had one though.
  • I'd be a bit worried about the wheels. It looks like they have quite a low spoke count - you can get away with it on very good quality wheels but at the price of that bike I expect you'll find they'll go out of true quickly.

I do, but I keep hearing about how hybrids are much quicker, better for commuting etc.

And that one looks cool :o

I like my bike but it's blue and has front suspension, which I am not keen on. It was an insurance replacement for my other bike (also the same make) which got stolen, that was black with no front suspension. I was gutted when it got pinched as it was the best bike I'd ever had.
