Hiya,

There are two things that really annoy me:
  • Companies who use 0845 number for customer support - why should I pay you, to resolve your !!!!-up?
  • Getting unsolicited phone calls on my mobile during work

So… I'm thinking why not get revenge and have my own 0845 number which forwards to my mobile - then I can use that when signing up for things and actually make a few quid from unsolicited calls.

Anyone tried this…?

There's got to be a reason why it wouldn't work, but the idea of charging call centres £1 per minute to cold call you is growing on me :D

No reason you cannot do this, though true premium rate numbers need to be registered with Payphoneplus and are charged an annual fee.

I use an 0844 number from Just0844numbers (you can even pick a number).
These numbers are free to set up and use, you receive 1ppm from callers, the number sits on top of your 01/02 number and you give out whichever to whoever as they both work, with your 01/02 number working as normal, so 01/02 numbers to F&F, 0844 number to the rip off companies that give you their 084/087 numbers.

0845 are useless for revenue share as a single consumer as the rebates are rubbish if not zero.

I don't think the revenue share would work as a forward, (but you could ask just0844numbers on their 0800 contact number), as that facility is usually paid for by the recipient of the call, i.e. you.

I have no affiliation to just0844numbers, except as a user of a single number to my home phone.

  • You would pay the forwarding cost from the 0845 to your mobile. Hence you would make nothing.
0845 numbers are local rate so not sure how they can be classed as premium rate. 0870 numbers however are different.

Actually I'd probably go for an 070* number as most people think they're just mobile numbers anyway. Anyone used one of them?

Nobody has paid a different rate for national/local calls for about 10 years! 0845 numbers are premium rate - they cost more than a geographic call, they can't come out of inclusive minutes, their revenue gets shared with the recipient. Why do you think every call centre uses them? It pays the staff's wages!

I had a block of 07021 numbers pointed at my mobile numbers and a block of 0870 numbers pointed at my landlines and earnt a nice little revenue stream for many years by giving them to companies as my contact numbers before Ofcom in their great wisdom decided to ban revenue sharing on 0870 which simply shifted the problem to 0844.

Some call centre workers would say they couldn't call me on an 0870 number, to which I always replied "But it's the same dialling code as yourselves. Wouldn't it be a local call?" They were always too stupid to even attempt to negate my false argument.

Some companies' customer databases also can't cope with landlines that don't start 01 or 02.

So in theory it costs you nothing to set up and use one of these?

Where do you get the 070 numbers from?

This was years ago (late 1990s). It was a company called Telinco which was later taken over by Opal Telecom. I don't think you can get them any more, or they're at least subject to heavier regulation regarding revenue sharing.

Seriously, how often do you guys get calls from businesses for it to be worth your while? The people who call me are friends and family and I'd rather not charge them money for calling me. I might get one call a month from my bank to my home phone which I'm never home to answer to they hangup as soon as they get to voicemaill. I'd be lucky to get £1 a year from them!
