BT Fon help!

I currently have an o2 router which Im more than happy with but want to get connected with BTFon - does anyone know if I need the Fonera+ or the Simpl just to act as the hotspot? also I presume to login its just a straightforward password and user id so my boyfriend could use it if he is out with his ipad if Im not using it?

  • Could we way off the mark here, but I thought that to use BT FON [wireless access over other BT users' connections) you had to have a BT Broadband connection yourself.

You can use any of the FON routers. I have a Fonera+ unfortunately that one keeps hanging every day or so for some reason so I've had to put it on a timeswitch to power cycle it at ~ midnight. You need to keep it connected for your id to remain active although when I moaned about it hanging I was told you get 30 days of grace anyway. I also got some free OpenZone minutes when I bought it.

Connecting to other people's FON hotspots is easy enough using your allocated userid and password - if you can find one that is working and is in range - don't forget that they are just people's home wifi routers and won't be specially set up to make them easy for use by others and they will mostly be in residential areas.

There is an Android app for autoconnecting so I expect there will be an iPad one too but I haven't bothered looking as that gets used at home only.

TBH I really haven't used the option very much and my own FON AP hasn't had any visitors at all despite it being easily accessible from outside.

& where does it say that?

    On the FON site...
The second you plug your Fonera SIMPL into your home broadband, you've got Fon WiFi at home. To get it on the go, just register your Fonera and Fon will give you access to the rest of the Fon network for free. It's that Simple!

I bought a FON router a year or so ago and connected it to my network so it produces a FON hotspot. In return I get an ID and password that allows me to connect to any FON hotspot worldwide. My ISP is VM.

BT just piggybacked on the already existing FON network.
