Thanks Dizzle, I know I am in the wrong and I am not looking for sympathy in this. I know it was a stupid, horrible thing to do and I work hard at my job and I am good at it. I made a stupid mistake and I am just looking for advice before I am back at work tomorrow.

Do you have a union at work?
Nobody here (unless they are the management at your place) can predict what may or may not happen, but pleased to see that by your 3rd post you actually demonstrate that you realise it was wrong, that is going to be a good defence as tbh the 1st 2 posts you did seem to appear blaze about the issue :o
and that attitude earlier is what may have made you a candidate on the jobseekers queue.
there are verbal, written and dismissal warnings and the length of time can vary.
The stress you are under at the moment can only be minimal compared to a victim of bullying.
    Good luck for tomorrow.

Bullying is serious, email and internet abuse is serious, sending jokes etc on the comapny systems is rarely tolerated anywhere, but it is not up to the IT guy it will be up to the directors etc, the IT guy just has to report it.
If you don't get dismissed then learn from the episode bullying is for losers!

I remember a few years ago sending the lottery numbers to every person in the company, I am talking about a huge multi-national here

Wait a minute, they didn't even know they were being bullied.

Steve you only have to view recent news articles, it's not so much they knew they were being bullied, that may have been easier, don't you think the conspiring to bully is what some of the issue is?
Is a racist or sexist joke only so because the offended party is not present?
and to top it off they are using the company systems to do so
The company have to protect themselves and their company employees by not turning a blind eye to certain wrong doings.
It could end up costly for them :o

Just cos the bullied person doesn't have hard evidence that they are bullied, chances are HIGH that they know. What do you think might have inspired your company to look into these emails? Perhaps the bullied colleague has noticed they are being ostracised, or that every time they leave their desk the whispering starts, or that an email went round that caused everyone to chuckle and whisper and they were the only one that couldn't join in.

It's usually really obvious, unpleasant, cowardly (stand up and say if you have a problem with someone) and has a massive impact on the person involved. I've seen people leave my companies as a result of bullying in the workplace, many go off with stress and many good workers leave just to get away from the back stabbers.

Just thought I'd say, I hope you get done for it.
I'll have some cheese please, bob.

I just wondered how it could stress them out if they didn't know. BTW it doesn't sound like not turning a blind eye, more like the Spanish Inquisition if they are paying someone to read all the emails.

I think Mizzbiz explained, and it could be a reason the IT dept is doing a trawl, it would not be accidental that they just picked up on this issue.
It's a reason why netbooks and smartphones have become common in the workplace, personal stuff is now done on my personal machines

We regularly get forwarded obviously hoax chain emails from well-meaning but thick as pigsh1t colleagues sent to the whole company as a warning of some ridiculous threat or other. They should be chased.

!!!!!!! Computer programmes can do allsorts these days so filtering emails for swear words or whatever you want doesn't need a paid drone wading through them.

If the OP's email exchanges contained swearing she is even more of a t1t, if not I'd say the company knew what they were looking for through their bullying behaviour away from the screen.

You come across as someone who takes accountability for their actions and has recognised they have made a mistake. I would say that holds you in a good starting position anyway and should reflect well.

Maybe chat about how you will be more inclusive in your dealings at work moving forwards and how you have identified that behaviour can make someone feel?
