I'm 'phoning a friend in Estonia who has an Estonian SIM card in his mobile. Is there any way to check if the calls are costing him (as well as me) as happens if you call someone abroad on the mobile with a UK SIM card?

No, if he's in Estonia, there's no charge to receive calls; if roaming yes.
Well that's the simple version. If it's Travelsim, which is one of the global roaming SIMs, then it will be free to receive in several other countries too.0
