Re-wire and Re-plumb quote

We have used the same plumber/electrician for years and now need a big job done. Re-wire , re-plumb and fit a new bathroom suite. It is a 1930's 3 bed semi. He has quoted £8,000 is this quote reasonable. We still have the really old electric fuse box etc and old radiators and pipework so it all needs stripped out. Thanks for any opinions.

Sounds very reasonable! Depends on location though. You need a break down of exactly what they are going to do as well though to work out if it is good value.

e.g. is it a full rewire or just a new consumer unit etc etc

    Thanks,
He is coming round to discuss the quote in full tomorrow so will check exactly what it includes. Do you usually pay everything at the end of the job or is it reasonable for them to ask for payment in stages.

The fuse board will have to be upgraded I would think - and this requires certification, so make sure he can test and cert for you

On larger jobs, staged payments are quite normal. He will have to get materials and he has fuel to buy to get to your house so you have to say that staged payments are a reasonable arrangement.
  • our new central heating £3200, rewire £2000, bathroom and kitchen not replumbed.

We know our plumber well so paid him an amount he asked for weekly to buy materials pay wages etc.,by the end of the job we owed £1000

Sometimes age just shows up all by itself ;)

that count....it's the life in your years :D

Thanks for the replies so far.He came round and discussed the quote. It includes all new pipework from the boiler , new thermostatic radiators , re-plumb and fit new bathrooom suite , kitchen was done a few years back when we re-did it so that is not in the quote. Electrics is a full rewire including extra sockets , new electric shower and replace meter all certified. It doesn't include plastering or re-tiling. We are not spending a fortune on the bathroom suite so feel that it is a fair quote. Now just have to live with the mess for a couple of weeks

We had our 4 bed completely rewired (including testing and fuse box) for just under £2000. We had new heating, plumbing, rads and boiler fitted for about £2500, and we had a new bathroom fitted (and tiled) for about £400 (we supplied all the bathroom furniture and shower etc though).

The plumbing stuff was done at just above cost though as it was my brother doing that bit :)

Have you got a itemised breakdown for this, I would love to see how someone can charge this much.

This is the problem we could be comparing apples and oranges. I hope that 38k isn't just for the labour.

But lets face it you could easily spend 38k with some super fancy megaflow system, high spec electrics with AV and a huge bathroom tiled with real stone and underfloor heating for example.

For example whack one of these in http://www.discountedheating.co.uk/shop/acatalog/Keston_C110_Condensing_Boiler.html

You are right without the breakdown you can't compare these prices!
