  • Looks like Easyjet can get you there and back for a total of about £240 at the moment (Friday flights)

I read somewhere that opodo is actually owned by a consortium of the scheduled airlines.

To be honest I'd trust any of the budget airlines I've flown with. After all, you are relying on them to get you safely up in the air and down again.

They all have their pros and cons - Ryanair planes are not particularly comfortable or attractive, but usually punctual. Easyjet is the opposite - nicer plane interiors but in my experience their flights always seem to be late.

Alitalia is fine but to be honest you don't get much more than with the budget airlines other than an inclusive baggage allowance.

  • It's true - Opodo is owned by a consortium! But I have found very cheap hotels on there - once £50 for a 4* in New York on the night in question. In Times Square. :D

For flights, I go either direct to the airline (like Easyjet), but by the time I factor in luggage, etc, the non-budget airlines are best. I get the best deals on those by going direct to the airline and opening a flyer miles account at the same time - paid £100 to Italy last summer (return)! STA is good if you're a student and/or under 26 - there are some great deals to be had there.

I would never ever book with the likes of Opodo, Flight Centre etc. You are far better booking direct with the airline, even if it may cost you a few £ more.

I was going to book flights once with the Flight Centre. As I did not know much about them I googled them and got a link to the review centre where I read some horror stories, likewise for Opodo and Expedia.

They are fine if nothing goes wrong, but if you need to change anything on the booking etc they are an absolute nightmare. Plus the airlines will not entertain you if you book through an agent.

My boss has just had an absolute nightmare with Opodo for a mis-spelling of a name. They were wanting to charge him £180 plus £40. They said they had to rebook the flight! If he had booked direct with the airline there would have been a simple 20 euro cost.

I once had a devil of a job trying to get a refund of an Air France flight from Australia to Manchester that I had bought through Expedia. It was a refundable ticket (less a small charge) but Expedia & Air France each claimed that it was the other party's responsibility to issue the refund.

It dragged on for about 12 months until I finally wrote to the Expedia chief exec, and got my refund plus £150 compensation.

Worked out OK in the end but it's not something I'd like to go through again. As has been said though, if nothing goes wrong then it's fine :)
