  • Just out of curiosity, have you funded the new ISA or did you open with nothing and are waiting till the new tax year to pay into it? Just want to get my facts straight as i think i will call them and try and open one on the phone!

In the online application, I said I did not intend to add savings this year (since I already have a cash ISA this year). It's sitting there with a 0 balance and I'll fund it next tax year (assuming it's still there).
  • Rang up our local Santander this a.m. as I was told I needed an appointment to open an I.S.A.
I said it had to be today, in fact within the next 30mins as we were coming into town.

I was told to come then , as the staff dealing with them were snowed under. We were delayed by about 15mins but when we turned up, the staff member was just going to lunch as she thought we weren't coming, she took her coat off and opened them for us there and then.

Job done and dusted, and personal service with a friendly advisor.

You applied for a 2011/2012 Santander Flexible ISA in person at a branch??
  • Accounts aren't generally tagged with a particular year. An ISA account is just an ISA account. It's the amount you can pay in that's tied to a specific year. So strictly, Sally has applied for a Santander Flexible ISA into which she intends to pay her 2011/2012 ISA subscription allowance.

That said, I'd have thought that when opening in-branch, they'd expect the initial opening deposit to be made there and then, which would obviously violate the ISA rules if you have already paid into a cash ISA this tax year.

Santander still haven't opened my account(after more than a month!!) although they have had my id documents for at least 5 days.
I am getting jumpy now wth April 5th fast approaching.

I think I will have to go elsewhere to use 10/11 allowance.
Is this allowed? Nothing has been paid to Santander.

Yes, perfectly allowable. If you've paid nothing into any cash ISA for 2010/11, you are absolutely free to open and fund another cash ISA with your 10/11 allowance.
