Hi,

I am looking to see if we have worked this out correct.

My gf currently has 2002 VW Beetle. She bought about 1.5 years ago as she always wanted a new beetle after having a 1971 classic one many moons ago. She thought she would be keeping it for as long as it would last, but unfortunately, she is finding its just very expensive to run, insure and tax, compared to her previous car, a little nissan Micra! She only uses it to commute to work about 10 miles away on A roads, so we have debated about buying a newer car which is small an cheap. We had a look at the Toyota Aygo and its Peugeot and citreon siblings, which seem to fit the bill. We looked at a very nice pug 107 yesterday which was 3 yrs old, only had 15K on the clock and very clean. Dealer said he could sell it for £5700, (originally £5999) we didn't even haggle as we weren't sure but reckon we could get it for £5500. She was very tempted, however, we are debating whether it's worth spending money on another car or just holding out with the old one.

I wrote out the following to see what it would cost realistically for both if we kept he VW or sold it and bought the pug:
We worked out the cost per year (fuel, tax, insurance, service, MOT) for both at:
VW: £2000
Pug: £1000

So:
Year one: Bought VW for £4000. + £2000 = 6000
Year two: +£2000 = 80000
year three: + 2000 = 10,0000
year four: +20000 = £12,000

So the vw over four years, (very roughly without anything rising in price, which it will, will cost £12000)

The pug factoring selling and buying the car from the VW:
Year one bought VW for £4000 + 2000 = 60000
Year 1.5: + 5500 (new pug) - £3500 (for selling old VW roughly price of sale, not spent anything on vw yet.)
= 8500.
Year 2: - no cost of servicing or mot etc as thrown in by dealer so cost will be just fuel, £450, plus insurance, £200 - 650.
running Total at end of year now:9150.
Year three: + 1000 = 10150
year four: + 1000 = 11150.

So, in theory, if we buy the pug, after 4 years she should be £1000 better off than if she kept the beetle.(very roughly).

Plus we haven't factored in that the VW is nearly 10 years old, already needs a few things doing on it and needs its cambelt done next year too. plus tyres are getting low and will need replacing next year. The pug wont need a service till next year, plus it will be very cheap to service, doesn't have cambelt and the dealer is putting on two new tyres.

Sorry for length of post, but just want to get things straight in my head and see if others think this possibly a good thing to do?
Have I done my sums right!

You wanna steer clear of the Pug's, I LOVED them until they went all soft and OAP(ish), the 106 GTI and 306 Rallye were the last great Peugeots!
Why? Because their handling and performance JUST about made up for the shoddy quality of their electrical systems (more Peugeots die from electrical faults that any other cause).
Worrying for a company that recently developed an all electric car :rotfl:

Now? As I said they've gone all soft, they're like Rover and Honda used to be, all old fartish, they're dull, have poor handling and poor performance.
As for it's Citroen and Toyota stable mates, Citroen/Peugeot(+Talbot) are the same company, Toyota make reliable cars, but no Toyota has ever felt like a car i'd want to own (and i've driven many of them), even the 2009ish Avensis estate (which I think looks nice in dark grey) drove like a sack of spuds.

Would never allow someone else to buy tyre's for my car, dealers will stick on the cheapest crap they can scrape out of the cheap tyre barrel.

The OP can buy an almost new Pug 107 / C1 / Aygo for around 6k.
They are not really Pug's, they are Toyota Aygo's.

Thank you! I wrote a big reply to Strider as his comment was just complete tosh and completely missing the point of why we are getting a 107, but deleted it as I thought it was a waste of effort! If we wanted a fast car that had performance, good looks etc, we would buy one! We want a cheap, slow, high MPG, runaround!. Also, I drive pugs myself and they are the best cars I have ever had and never had any problems with them, compared to so called reliable VW's which have always failed in someway or another.

But are they built in the same factory? with the same wiring looms and (more importantly with P/C/T) electrical connectors?

    Yes, just cosmetic differences.

Personally I would go for the Toyota. It has a more reliable engine than any of the others. The reason I say is I have had Toyotas in the past and they have always been trouble free, mechanically they seem to go on forever. As one of the replies earlier mentioned electrical problems with Peugeots and Citroens, this is common complaint from a lot of people. However I am not sure whether Toyotas share their engines with the other two as there are only so many collaborations between the big manufacturers.

The Toyota Aygo version comes with a 5 year warranty, the Pug and Citroen come with less warranty from new.

Get a new car, anything is better than a beetle ;)

Go for whichever is cheapest out the 3 (probably the citroen or pug), as said they are all identical and if one or the other has a longer warranty. And get one with aircon if you can.

Or get a bigger, newer, better equiped car for less money and spend some of the saving on the extra petrol it'll use and some on a holiday ;) :money:
