This is why I got out of retail/customer service after working in that industry since leaving school. Customer satisfaction doesn't appear to matter any more. It's all about footfall, average spend, upselling, cross-selling, discouraging refunds etc, etc.

I changed career and now work in the NHS, starting at the bottom. 10 months in and got my first promotion. It's so much more satisfying when your boss thanks you for working hard and playing your part in saving someone's life today than being thanked for making someone else richer after wringing that extra last penny out of as many customers as possible that day.

It's the reason I was glad I couldn't stay on at my last job when I started Uni as they said I couldn't work just weekends, except I now find myself unemployed and applying for anything, including retail. Don't really want to go back to it but if that's the only option I have I'll take it, but I'll keep smiling! The sooner I can become a teacher the better!

wow thank you for that hint, my scanning rate is low, averaging 20% per minute, because I prefer to scan at the rate the customer packs, rather than throwing the stuff down the belt and getting an angry customer. It works not in my favour, but it keeps the customer happy, as a friends' parents have told me that that's why they come to my till. I appreciate your post, thanks again.

Maybe they should put that in writing, or not if you could get in to trouble.....

It is no wonder customer service seems to be going out the window when everyone now has ridiculous targets to hit. I'd rather have someone be nice and friendly at the tills than someone who rushes me. I used to work in retail and never rushed to get things done as I believe in helping the customer and making them feel welcome. Unfortunately I know that not every shop runs this way and that targets come first
Thats why I shop at Waitrose..
  • Maybe you should tell your supervisor to shut the f**k up lol.

  • There is no way on earth I could work in that environment, and I'll bet the supervisors are ungrammatical pillocks too

May be worth telling the supervisor how their comments make you feel. Whilst they may be power mad, and generally not nice people, i'd also bargain they may be stressed in their own job and not realising how they are coming across and the impact it has on you. I don't think most supervisors actively want to demotivate and upset their staff.

A courteous chat where you say how keen you are to offer good customer service, but at times you are left feeling you can't do anything right, may make a positive difference? At worst they can ignore you and you can still approach personnel anyway

When I worked at Sainsbury's well over a decade ago, I was told off for scanning too quickly.... I did pack at the same time too...

Read up on the rules and play the system as if you ever get screwed over and can prove that you worked within the rules then you can sue the !!! off them. Have you had all the relevant training. DSE tests, work place assessments, safety training and HSE work place assessments as well as making sure their are enough first aiders on the premises and that a standard fire drill is run and the alarms tested as they should be.
