chocdrop4767 wrote:and this just simply plugs into my sky router...and that's it? just like plug and play? because the reviews talk of some difficulty in configuring elements of the adapter..as you've guessed i'm not a techie LOL
can this still work when the PC is off?
Yeah, you just plug this into your router. Yes, as long as you leave your router switched on then you can use your VoIP phone service without the PC one.
None of these ATAs or IP phones are really plug and play, there is some seting up that needs doing, this is due to different people wanting different VoIP providers. Saying that other than a few things that you can alter for your own customisation, then it's just a case of entering the account details for your chosen VoIP provider.
It may look baffling at first, but I can send you all the configuration details required for setting the device up for UK ringing patterns and other UK phone settings.
The Linksys/Sipura range is better, because it does have plenty of configurable options, as some ATA there is little you can change, and therefor stuck with USA style ringing pattern for instance. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
I'll take you up on that offer when i get it if you don't mind.
I can't thank you enough for your help.
If i have more questions, shall i carry on this thread or PM you (if i'm allowed to as a new user?)0 -

Sure that's not a problem.
No worries.chocdrop4767 wrote:If i have more questions, shall i carry on this thread or PM you (if i'm allowed to as a new user?)
I don't mind, however on a public board it may be of help to others at a later date. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... cheers mate, makes sense.
just hope i can connect it all up. I have a dell Pc which is about 5 yrs old, so it doesn't have an ethernet port on the back of the tower, so had the get a wireless USB adapter to go with the router...it was fun and games getting those two things talking to each other!
so i always dread adding something new...customer technical support helplines get a battering from me

can something like this ethernet VOIP phone plug into my sky router...as thinking about it, even thought its a bit more expensive than the ATA, it appears to be less hassle (or things to go wrong...as it really is just plug in and go)?0 -

Yeah, that plugs into your router, however like the ATAs there will be the setting up of the account details, and a little setting up of other details. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... decisions, decisions
what route would you suggest? ATA and normal phone or ethernet VOIP phone? I just don't know enough about the pros and cons of either approach0 -
Personally I'd choose the ATA, unless I could get a 4 - 10 line decent VoIP phone for around the same price (which at the moment you can't).It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... fair point...
for me i'm not expecting anymore that 4-5 people to call me in a day, so i don't think i'd need the faciility to hold and swap between callers, so the D-Link phone i posted a link to earlier just might suit my purpose for the time being
I'll do some more pricing up of both options before plumping for one
cheers0
