My OH picked up some cooked marinated chicken for a party earlier in the year, when I got it out of the fridge I noticed it said 3 mar - it was 15th mar! The other pack said 30 mar so we presumed it was a misprint.

Anyway, we weren't going to risk it so I took it back to Asda & explained. They were really apologetic, said they do stock rotate but sometimes things slip through the net. They gave us double back, a fresh pack (in date!) And a goodwill gesture.

I think it just depends on who you get at customer services! It does seem like your local stores seem to be having trouble with their dates!
I do agree in someways that the dates are there as a guide but stores shouldn't really be selling after "use by" date on meat, dairy etc - if you buy something, you do presume it will be in date - but if people want to use it then its up to them - each to their own. (This is just my opinion please don't shoot me down!!)

    Sorry Dr Sarahg1969,

Facts are, this happened; it's your body telling you this isn't right for you. This wasn't a supermarkets fault; it was the parents for not throwing it away. A couple of days she told me.

If medical advice was sought and tests were conducted that proved that a dairy product just a couple of days out of date caused illness, I apologise. But I would be surprised.

If your so good at spotting out of date items how come you went home with some meat 3 days past its best?

Is there a recent case of anyone that has died through out of date food?

I brought a chicken that was 2 days past its use by date, I got home and then noticed it. I went straight back to the store and spoke to the manager, I was very polite and pointed out that i have now had to come back (had to get another chicken for tea that night) She gave me a refund for the chicken and another one free and also £10 gift card to use again. The £10 gift card was a shock but we did used to do 90% of our shopping there before it put its price up.

If you had bothered to read my reply post (26), then you would know why i wasn't on the ball.

As for any cases of people who have died from out of date food, i can't give you an answer, try checking it out yourself.
Maybe i was a tad o.t.t. but I’m sure there has been many food poisoning cases as well as people eating food well past it's use by date with no effects whatsoever.
This is why use by, sell by, best before dates
are set in place with "use by dates" being the up most important to the supermarket, not the customer, because this is when a supermarket can be prosecuted for selling that product beyond the use by date.
I'm not bothered who eats what after they have bought it, this being 1 day or 10 years out of date, it's up to the consumer. The importance is that the law says these supermarkets cannot sell out of date "USE BY" food, they know it but most customers don’t!!

Perhaps also worth pointing out that supermarket meat has been hanging for no time at all (17 days on average for beef) and it doesn't suddenly become toxic the moment the use by date is up. Personally I like really well hung meat (35 days for beef) so I would not put a lot of store in use by dates on fresh meat, I'll pick things up from the reduced shelf and use them a week later as long as they are not pre-prepared.

Same here,Put it like this,if you buy a joint of meat from your butcher's,how do you know what the sell by or use by date of that joint is?...I don't & I've never seen a butcher who has put the use/sell by dates on meat outside of a supermarket.
I am reading a very good book at the moment,The Irish Butcher Shop by Pat Whelan, where he discusses the differences between supermarket & butchers meat and when it comes to sell/use by dates he states the is one important thing to use to determine if the meat is off....you nose!
I very rarely but meat in a supermarket,I prefer my local butchers, for one the meats traceable to the source.

Well, we've just been told the correct thing to do by "Martin" on the One Show so we shouldn't argue.

When it goes past it's use by date, throw it away. If its best before (other than eggs) use your other senses.
