Been offered job....

in Dubai.

I'm a teacher and things here are sh!te. Worse than sh!te. Conditions are worsening and we seem to be getting steam rollered into accepting. I'm 'only' supply so have no real rights as it is anyway.

Anyway, I've been offered a job in Dubai. A huge part of me wants to take it. I have no boyfriend, no real close friends and am stuck in a bit of a rut still at home with my mum and dad.

I'm 26 and always thought I'd be settled down by now. I do want to be. It just hasn't happened for me? They look for a 2 year contract minimum to be taken up.

I'm so confused - what would you do if you were me?

What would the finances be? Have you looked into the living conditions in Dubai and how expensive things are?

What would happen after two years, if you returned to get a job in the UK?

What if after 3months you decide it isn't for you?

Thanks, these are questions I've asked myself lots of times.

    The package itself is amazing:

    apartment with pool and gym
    medical insurance
    transport to and from workplace
    visa sorted for me
    annual flight money given home
    bonuses every year
    tax free salary
    utilities allowance

So, my monthly salary would basically be my own, and the only essentials I would be paying out is food really. And socialising.

I've read up on breaking contracts but not asked this particular employer. Seems the usual thing is to ban you from working in Dubai for a year. Which, if you want to go home isn't really an issue.

I'd go. It would be a fantastic broadening experience. Even if you stayed the full 2 years and then decided to come home, you'll still only be 28 AND you'll have something else to add to your CV.

Edit. My cousin went off to Japan to teach English for a while. She came home with a husband as well as a fat bank account. :D

  • Does the job include regular return to UK? I know friends who had contract in the Middle East who were entitled to regular flights home (2 or 3 times a year as I recall).

If the job is bona fide and pays well, offers good conditions of service etc. then why not go for it - if you only sign up for 2 years you have a return date to look forward to if things don't work out.

I would suggest you keep abreast of changes in the curriculum in your subject area etc. so finding a job is easier when you return, but it does sound like a great opportunity.

No, I don't think 'regular' flights are included. A flight home and back again is provided each year in summer (or rather, the money is, it's up to you what you do with it).

The 2 year contract, I'd imagine, is something that can be broken if things do get really bad. They can't physically chain me there if someone wants to leave.

Thanks for the positive comments so far.

The people there can be amazing - just don't even consider going into business with them. Do your contract and have a brilliant life experience (try to keep the cost of the flight home available just in case).
