Application for a credit card - no search carried out?

Hi there,

Just a quick question - I decided to apply for the Barclaycard 20mth on balance transfers offer, but believe I have been declined. I think this is due to me getting the address incorrect (flat and house number issue as I live in an apartment).

I've had creditexpert for quite a while and it's been over a week since I made the application and nothing is showing on my credit history under searches.

Is it possible they didn't do a credit search at all? (that would be good). I did phone barclaycard the next day and they confirmed the address on the application differs from my actual address.

I think from now on, I'm going to apply for any credit cards over the phone to avoid the address issue as it never looks correct online! :-)

Thanks for your input
Rob

Barclaycard search Equifax, not Experian (Credit Expert).
Debt free and staying that way!
  • Hi Jen,

Thanks for the reply - would this not show up at both agencies though (Experian and Equifax)? I'm asking as otherwise my subscription to credit expert is rather pointless as it's supposed to alert you to 'any' credit searches or changes on your credit profile.

This is interesting. I live with my partner in a Flat x, x House, x Court type of address, and I'm currently having problems with my credit report as my credit cards, joint bank account and Next Directory account aren't showing up on my credit report. I'm trying to get this sorted and I believe it's down to my address.

My partner recently applied for a Virgin Credit Card to do a balance transfer. He has a good credit record, no missed payments ever, has credit cards which he pays off, doesn't have a huge amount of available credit etc etc. This is the first time he's applied for credit since we moved into this address since 10 months ago, and it straight awway rejected him online, not even a 'you will hear from us later' type of decision. At first we just thought, oh well nevermind we weren't desparate for it anyway, it was only to BT £1,000 over which we can pay off in a couple of months anyway but wanted to have 0% rate on it.

Do you think this address is causing problems? He also got his credit report online and again our joint account isn't showing up on his credit report at all! Is it worth him calling up to apply (though it would now have to be a different company as they said don't apply again for another 6 months!)

Nope, it will only show up at the one they search. Credit Expert will only alert you to any changes to your Experian report.

Have you checked your reports with all three agencies, to check these accounts aren't showing on any? If not, it could well be an address issue. If this is the case, your partner could contact Virgin and ask for them to get a human underwriter to look at the application (after explaining the situation).

Why would the address have anything to do with it, living at the address for 10 months I would think why the OP got turned down.

hi, Gemma C25 i also have this kind of address issues since moving into a flat in a court on a street kind of address. i called up experian and the guy on the other end said he would put in different variations of my address on their sytems so that more of my credit accounts would be reflected on my report. he asked me to give it 24hours and it did work, it also improved my credit score somewhat as i was able to get a good limit on a halifax cc. it could be that your credit accounts are not reflecting on your report, which for some people may be good news and for others may not show them to be as credit worthy as the card company may want due to a lack of history caused by the address thingie.

i am not saying this is definitely the issue but its worth calling experian and finding out if adding variations of your address would make a difference.
    cheers

That not correct address formatting can lead to an application being declined.

When a lender puts the addresses in different formats it makes it harder for the lender to credit score the applicant correctly.

The applicant may want to contact the appropriate CRA to ask them to add all the different variations of there address to there credit profile.
