    OK fair enough, I misunderstood the point -- I thought you meant that lack of visibility was a factor. Sorry :)

    Still, if the car is unbalanced enough that braking would cause unpredictable results, it might be an idea to slow down a little.

    It's braking that causes the imbalance, which is really the point I was making. A corner can be perfectly safe at speed until you do something stupid like slamming on the brakes.

    You brake, the centre of gravity shifts to the front wheels, the rear end becomes lighter (less grip), the front end becomes heavier (more grip) this is not normally a problem unless you happen to be cornering at the time.

    The taller the car the worse it is, then factor in soft suspension and this effect is multiplied..... The results can be catastrophic :(

    Indeed though the prescribed and supplied apparatus for such measurement is the vehicle speedometer and so it is to that which we should give greater credence and it suffers much less hysteresis than a sat nav

    After googling the meaning of hysteresis , I still have no idea what you mean

    If a speedo is wrong and is proven to be by a satnav in the vehicle then the speedo is irelevant

    It's simple, just drive to the conditions where the satnav is accurate (flat, straight, clear sky etc.) and is indicating exactly 70. Note what position your speedo is at. Suppose that turns out to be 77mph, as it is currently on my Mondeo.

    You now know you can drive at an indicated 77mph without breaking the 70mph speed limit. Combine with cruise control for the best results.

    I wouldn't recommending trying to extrapolate that figure upwards or downwards. Do it separately for each speed you're interested in.

    A sat nav, I would assume, is using an "average" because it is having to get its reading via a satellite and there has to be some delay surely??

    A car which underreads is not legal. The majority of speedometers do indeed overread, typically by 5-10%.

    The cost of making a speedo that reads 100% correctly would be prohibitively expensive. Since an underreading speedo is illegal, what makes you think that manufacturers don't err on the side of caution?

    But they do have to work to cost which means the speedo will never be as accurate as the satnav. To protect themselves from the claims culture they ensure the accuracy is always to the plus side to ensure they cannot be held liable if you get a ticket for 32 when your speedp readout is 30.;)

    I guess the german manufactures can be bothered to calibrate their speedos properly.

    That's because some of them with in-built sat navs can't be bothered to modify their kit to allow a 6 digit UK post code.
    I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
