It's actually 25p for the first 3 minutes then 5p a minute but close enough :)

The 17 minute call I made was the first call I made since topping up on Thursday, no texts made and I only have a basic phone so don't use the internet. I was calling my mum on her mobile who is on the Tesco network but not sure if that has any impact.

I might have a look and see what grumbler has suggested.

Calls to other UK mobile networks on that plan are 40p/min, so that would tally with approximately £7.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Orange bundles on payg are great on Dolphin, £5 a month = unlimited texts, £5 for 100 mins for the month or buy weekly 100 mins bundles for £5, data costs are a draw back compared to cheap 3 if payg data is a use you want

I got a mate on Orange 100 mins a week and unlimited texts for £25 with flexibility to not lose mins when in Europe for work as he does not buy them that week if away, if he was here most the month then I'd recommend the £25 a month 3 payg add on for 100 mins more than Orange, 3000 texts and UNLIMITED data

Still for your usage £10 on 3 buys 100 mins, 3000 texts and 500mb data, I'd add an extra fiver as for £15 you get 300mins, 3000texts and UNLIMITED data (no fair use policy & includes tethering (using mobile as modem)

I'm more interested in getting more minutes for my money than texts and don't use internet on my phone but thanks for looking.

How about 300 minutes on PAYG for £10 a month? Here's how...

As previously mentioned, Orange offer "extras" on PAYG.

The 100 minute bundle for £5.00 doesn't just provide 100 minutes, it gives you a run-on rate (what you pay when the inclusive minutes end) of just 5p per minute - to any landline or UK mobile network. That takes some beating on PAYG. If you also make sure you're on the Canary tariff, a £10 top up will additionally get you free 100 off-peak minutes.
This would mean £10 a month on Canary, buying the 100 minute bundle each month would mean up to 300 minutes each month - as long as at least 100 are off peak, plus the 100 included in the £5 bundle and a further 100 at 5p each using the remaining credit. You'd also build up £12 phone fund credit over the year, enough to get a free basic replacement handset each year.

Be careful of switching to any SIM-only contract deals unless you are fully aware of the run-on cost after inclusive minutes have run out. For example, Talkmobile offer a £5.11/month SIM with 100 free minutes - but every minute after the included 100 minutes is31p/minute which is getting pretty normal on these deals. If you do explore SIM-only deals with inclusive minutes, aim for a bundle you will rarely exceed.

If you are going to use well under 100 minutes a month, Asda, Giffgaff, Tesco and Talkmobile all do no-frills versions of PAYG offering a straight forward 8p per minute from your credit. Certainly easy to understand! Chitterchatter also do a T-mobile SIM for £6 a month with 100 minutes and either unlimited landline calls or unlimited T-mobile calls (but if you go over free minutes by just 10 minutes in a month, one of the 8p/min PAYG deals would have been cheaper).

Tesco Lite, Asda and Giffgaff are all 8p for calls and 4p for texts on PAYG

It only shows you the standard rate for comparism purposes. The extra per minute/ run on rate of 5p applies if you have the bundle and use more then the 100 inclusive minutes.

Hi lynseydee, whilst i can see in you original post you have asked about PAYG tariffs, have you or would you consider a sim only 30-day tariff? If so Mr T is currently offering a competitive deal. £10 per month will give you 500 mins & 5000 txt. So, if the calls that you are likely to make will be to just landlines (excluding) premium rate numbers of course and to mobiles then it might be one to consider.

Thanks Milgo, this is exactly what I mean in that there are so many offers and deals around it's not as easy as it used to be between choosing between contract and PAYG. It confuses me no end :)
