Proposing Abroad...

Got 5 nights in the canaries booked and intend to propose to my girlfriend. The ring was reasonably expensive so Im not sure how best to go about this.

I will have to hide the ring from her for the first few nights... because as soon as I propose I know she will be so paranoid about losing the ring she probably wont be able to relax and enjoy the holiday as much.

So my question is where or how should I store/hide the ring until I propose!

I mean can you really trust hotel safes? Should I hide it in the room? My best idea is so have the ring stitched into my shorts! Crazy I know but its the only way it will be in my posession at all times. I could then use a sharp object to tear the shorts to get the ring out when Im about to propose.

Im just weary of trusting hotel safes...

Would you maybe consider proposing with a different ring, like a cheap one from Accessorize or something so that you have a ring with you to propose with. You can then let her know after she accepts that you have her real ring at home and just didnt want her to have the added stress of worrying about the ring while on holiday. It also gives her the chance to get excited all over again to see the ring when you guys get home.
  • yeah i'm considering it too..

off to india nepal in sept, for 3 weeks, and after hearing my mate got robbed 2/3 rds of his cash and ipod touch etc..
I'm thinking it may be worth buying some costume jewelry, and getting a real ring when we get home.

on the other hand i think i may wait another year. :0)

She will wear it every day for the rest of her life, no point worrying about losing it.
Have it as a named item on your home insurance (assuming it's valued at more than £1.5k).
I'm assuming you have bought a certified diamond, and hold a full valuation as you'll need that for insurance purposes.

Don't stress about it, just insure it :)

Agree with malkie - though as I understand it, you're more concerned about it going missing while it's in your possession pre-proposal...but have you thought about airport security? My husband worked with a guy who ended up dropping to one knee at security since security staff were insitent upon opening and inspecting the compartment of his carry-on where the ring was, and his fiancee-to-be was stood right next to him.

It sounds like you have a specific plan on when to propose as you indicated you had to hide the ring from her the first few nights - no way you could bring the proposal forward so you didn't have to worry about storing it/hiding it?
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

I took my engagement ring through airport security without issue.
Check it in if you are worried about getting rumbled. That increases the chance of loss, but irrelevant it appropriately insured.

The critical things are the certification and valuation.

Hubby proposed when we were on holiday a few yrs ago. He had the ring in his camera bag with a note saying please be discreet in case they asked him to empty it as he had visions of having to propose in Manchester airport :)

That is what I did, only I didn't bother with a note.

As I always have my camera bag with me on holiday my now wife never suspected a thing.

The cheap ring is an amazing idea because Ive had a photobook made on photobox.com to propose with.

Its a storyboard of how we met then the last page is a pic is the ring!

So it would be cool to propose with the cheap one and say the ring in the picture is waiting for her at home!
