Tom Tom map Update

Hey

Am thinking about paying £20 for the latest UK map.

Just wondered if you can see how many new roads etc will be added or not before you buy. Just not sure if it's gonna be worth it.

Cheers

What is the current map version you have (You can see your map version number my clicking on the signal bars, then click version) or when did you purchase sat nav if its 3 years old then yes worth the £20 if less i would give it a miss.
The same errors and lack of new build house developments are still missing in my area, no new roads they are too busy patching up the existing and i have the very latest map v865.3245

I don't mind the principle of Pocket GPS World charging for the Camera POI files - but I do object to the amount that they want, so have never deigned to sign up. The pricing points to lack of competition in this niche.

I have signed up. It seems good value for £19.99 per year. TomTom cameras are the same price and are quite inaccurate by comparison. Pocket GPS ones are updated every week and I have spotted almost no errors in about 18 months of using them and view they save me the risk of points and fines each year.

As for updated maps from TomTom I don't think they are worthwhile and they try quite hard to trap you into a perpetual upgrade which might be more worth the money if they corrected clear and longlasting errors

I have an AA Road Map and a speedometer, cost £2 a year to update the AA Road Map.;)

Actually it is technically possible for any satnav maker to map all UK speed limits and warn you in real time if you are exceeding. Though I don't speed, I'm not so smug as to say I don't need electronic assistance to avoid missed road signs - and some places are notoriously poorly signed for speed limits.

So do any sat navs have this function?

Well done. I find it increasingly difficult to see maps resting on the front seat in the dark so prefer the satnav and the tendency of speedlimits to change frequently and without warning means that even the most law abiding citizen can fall foul of the traps set. I expect the AA man still salutes you when he sees the chrome badge on the front of your model T. ;)

I would never pay the Pocket GPS World subscription, because of the way that they built that "product".

Essentially what happened is that they got volunteers to create the speed camera database, with a promise on their website that it would always be free. And then suddenly it wasn't.

It's also not so important to keep the database of cameras up to date now, because of changes to the way that they are funded, and where fine money ends up. This means that hardly any new ones are being added these days, and many are being removed (e.g. the only one near me now has a bright red "Not in use" bag over it, and fewer than a quarter of the sites in my county actually have a camera present.) Add to that the fact that they are no longer permitted to hide fixed cameras any more, and the fact is that it's the mobile ones that you have to fear most now.

Too true, and in fact in the early days of motoring the AA had a proper system for warning it's mambers of upcoming speed traps, per:

    ....ahead of their time, eh?
