Change of registered car owner

I've never heard of a "bill of sale" for a car before but it sounds like it may be an American thing, which could be where confusion is coming from as their system is based on "title" which is a document telling you who the owner of the car is.With the car being gifted to me how do i go about this as there is no bill of sale in my name.
In England the Registered Keeper is the one in charge of the vehicle, there is no official document that you have to fill out to be legal owner of the car. You're the legal owner of the car because it was given to you, simple.

He everyone, thanks for all the useful info
It turns out all I need to do is to get a statement from my grandad signed and dated to state he's given me ownership, or I can make out a receipt for £1 for example, signed/dated.
Through LV i was asked who was the owner and the keeper as they are seen as two separate entities, it does actually state on the new logbook/form that im the registered keeper, but this doesn't mean i am necessarily the registered owner...which is where this query started0 -

There is no registry of car owners. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Seems odd. I've never had an insurance company ask for proof the car is mine. It's just "are you the owner of the car?" "yes"... move on to next question.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
Not sure all the above is 100% correct. i Have a company cay i am not the owner as it belongs to the lease company but i am the registered keeper.0

I don't think anyone has said anything to contradict that.
There IS a central registry of keepers of cars.
There IS NOT a central registry of owners of cars.
The insurance company obviously needs to know who the owner is, but this information is not held centrally anywhere.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
