I think they just reflect people's interests. If no one cared about houses, they wouldnt be on. It's all about ratings and advertising. They did seem to go off the air in late 2007 for some reason. ;)

I agree about it being all about advertising.

Why did they go off the air in late 2007 ? Were people not interested in their homes any longer ? Does this mean that people are only interested in improving/moving home when prices are rising ? If so, that would indicate that there are a lot of people out there who are motivated mainly by greed, rather than actually living their lives and enjoying their homes.

    Not really.

The credit crunch and consequent falling prices from 2007 onwards had a lot of unexpected impacts, namely.....

-- Contrary to expectations, the gap between FTB and 2TB properties actually grew, as FTB properties devalued far more than 2TB properties. Moving up the ladder became more difficult, not easier.

-- Borrowing money to move became more expensive for a large section of borrowers. And impossible for most potential FTB's.

-- As the numbers of buyers declined due to mortgage rationing, and the value of homes fell beyond the point of negative equity for many vendors, the available supply of property fell by almost 50%, as the number of houses listed for sale fell from 1.1 million to just 600,000.

Given the above, making "reality" TV shows about buying, selling, moving, etc became a bit pointless. Most people either couldn't or wouldn't be able or interested in doing so.

On a wider note, it's always been my understanding that most vendors in market don't strictly speaking "need" to move, but rather "want" to move because they fancy a change...... However that usually means they'll only sell IF they can get the right price.... Particularly today where they'll need to preserve equity to get the right LTV mortgage deals to match what they're on in many cases.

Are there any new programmes at all? I believe homes under the hammer is still going? But haven't caught any prime time stuff on the main channels.

I just keep seeing repeats on all the more4 and rinse and repeat channels....that said, I don't watch too much television. If I'm gonna sit down and watch it, I usually stream a film.

I think the popularity of property, and other reality TV shows, is down to the simple reason that they are very, very cheap to make.

I think you're reading too much in to this.

Filming people looking around property is cheap. As is filming people eating their dinner, filming people cooking, filming people sitting in a room and filming people doing a lot of other 'reality' things that doesn't incur any production cost.

I watch a few reality shows and I don't have any interest in taking the subject matter and doing it mysef. In fact, I have a week off this week and happily watched 'Homes Under The Hammer' this morning with a cup of tea, but I have no interest whatsoever in buying a property at auction. In the same way I can watch 'Come Dine With Me' and not want to cook a meal for three weirdos I've never met before.

These programmes are on because property was fashionable and this type of stuff is very cheap to make. I think we've all just got used to spending half an hour looking around people's houses, so they've stayed on. It's just lazy, cheap telly. Don't start reading in to all of it that it's all to do with 'greed'. It's all just something to watch with a cuppa before doing something else.

No Graham, prices are naturally stronger in spring/summer and weaker in winter EVERY year.

Hence why all the indices seasonally adjust.

Now sure, you can tamper with that if you put a temporary stamp duty change in place or something, but you know full well it's the case so stop with the pedantry.
