How to chose a new mobile?

Can anyone give me some good ideas of what to consider when buying?

I am in my 50's and have only ever had DD's hand-me-down phones......so I am totally a novice phone buyer! :o

I email, surf, text and ring - but not a huge user.

I would prefer to buy and have on pay as you go, NOT contract.

I like touch screens, I would like access to apps.....tesco, weight watchers, bejewelled (that sort of stuff).

I am short sighted so probably wouldn't get on with a tiny screen and have arthritis in my fingers, so probably wouldn't be able to use a teeny Qwerty pad.

Would like to pay no more than £250 for the phone and pay as you go for £10 to £15/£20 a month.

Don't really mind what network but have some money in an Orange phone fund, so might be cheapest to get it from them.....

I have Virgin tv so they have what LOOK like good offers to me.....but what do *I* know???? :rotfl:

Any helpful suggestions would be welcomed :T

Best to go into a shop, and see what they have to offer. I'm with T-mobile as I've found them very competitive and helpful, but Virgin do good offers to customers.

Think about exactly how many call minutes, texts, you need, and subscribe to a "unlimited" internet deal too. I personally would have a look on the internet about what each provider had to offer, and then go to the shops you were interested in, as usually can get a better deal instore (in my experience).

if you have wifi at home and will use the hone for surfing and emailing from home you wouldnt need to pay for data.

though saying that 3 mobile have PAYG 300mins, 3000 texts and unlimited data for £15 a month (or giffgaff could be good too) (but would be good to work out how many mins/texts you would use a month)

I would suggest something with a big screen.

something like the motorola defy (review here) could be good, 3.7 inch screen, android so has excelent email (esp gmail if you use that), web and apps from the android market. and as a bonus it is water/dust/scratch proof.
also with android if you dont like the keyboard you can always just install another one that suits you better.

Thank you for the advise! :D

I have wifi at home and would mostly use the phone at home......so does that mean I wouldn't need to be thinking about the web access or paying extra for it???

Doh! This makes me sound really dense but I had just assumed I would be paying to access the https://www.....:o

Thanks, I had already read that thread and followed the links but it didn't help me narrow down a choice, hence my question with specific amounts of monies available.

I have a houseful of teenagers trying to use the available pc's - hence ME being relegated to phone access most of time :-)

Hi, if you do use up to £20/month it might be worth considering a contract, you can get the Nokia N8 for £20/month at www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk or the Samsung Galaxy S for a similar tariff from mobiles.co.uk , in either case you are getting a free phone that would cost around £350 sim free . As in all such cases it is only worth going for such a deal if your actual useage warrants it. I have used both phones and prefer them to the iphone.
