Wouldn't salt water bathing be good - it's one of my first ports of call for me and the family?

Well I had to bath my Guinea Pig recently and she came to no harm. She particularly enjoyed being towel dried. I made sure that I kept her warm and dried her thoroughly. Mine live inside during the cold weather so she didnt get chilled. I just used plain water but you could use shampoo I guess.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

tiny bit of baby shampoo, rinse well and dry as best you can.
  • My very elderly rabbit has regular baths due to not cleaning himself properly anymore and getting yukky underneath. I've always used baby shampoo with no ill effects.

You do have to be very careful with rabbits though, and have two people if possible, one to hold, one to shampoo and rinse. Do not get water anywhere near his ears as water in his ears will cause problems. Also hold him firmly because rabbits will struggle if frightened and can do serious injuries to their backs just by kicking their hind legs about too violently. Make sure the water is tepid, not too warm, make sure he is 110% rinsed clean or the shampoo will irritate the skin or be ingested when he grooms himself and make sure he is 110% dry before going back outside as they can be prone to getting cold if out back outside when still damp.

They are house bunnies so won't be back outside at all.. The heating comes on about 5 so I was going to do him abotu then while it is warm in the house.

Baby shampoo I have.. thanks I'll do him with that.

It is just his back end and hind legs need a wash so I have no intention of being near his head at all.. they were out in the run yesterday and he loves to dig a hole and sit in it but the mud is still very wet so he got muddy and then had poo stick to the mud.. and he keeps looking at it but not cleaning it! His brother is as clean as ever :D

I have an old bath mat I was going to cut a bit off to fit the kitchen sink (belfast so he can't climb out!) and just run an inch or so of water in and rub him clean. I have a rubber glove somewhere..

I've bathed cats before so this cannot be as bad as that can it?

I've bathed guineas but never a bun. When my bun used to get an icky butt, I used to take a bucket of tepid water to the shed, sit her on my knee on her back, and just wash her back-end with a sponge. it soon comes loose and rinses away. i would try not to submerge the bun in water as it could get stressed and start kicking, which can lead to spinal injuries. Have fun!
  • I have also had to do this for a couple of bunnies of mine. This takes two people and works for big bunnies better than holding them on their backs and using

Like you, I found that the best way was in the kitchen sink, fill the sink with about 1-2 inches of lukewarm water and a small dash of baby shampoo. Put an old towel in the bottom of the sink (so the bunny does not slip) and another on the draining board.

One of you lowers the bunny bottom into the water and holds the bunny so their their feet and head is on the draining board, the other person has the "fun" of the washing the lower end.

The holder has to stroke and reassure the bunny and the washer should be as gentle as possible.

We usually dry with old towels and then use a hairdrier on a low setting afterwards, a bit whiffy but it leaves them all fluffy and dry.

One actually seemed to enjoy this....

My boy is a house rabbit and I do just that too.

NOTHING is as bad as bathing cats LOL!!

Sounds like you've got everything covered, you'll be fine.

I think my boy has started to almost enjoy his baths, I'm sure he feels much better afterwards.

I can tell you have never tried to bath a ferret...

Once they are used to it and realise that it won't hurt, they are not too bad, but the first time is horrendous!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
