BT landline: are there more responsive providers?

Hi Guys, My old folks have just had their BT service out for nearly three weeks.BT's agents in India? kept saying the fault would be fixed by a certain time and nothing happened. There appears to be a disconnect between India and the UK.
As my parents have chronic health/infirmity issues it is imperative they have a phone company which will repond to faults quickly. All they need is a phone line for making and receiving calls. We have tried them with a mobile phone but they struggled to use it.
Do BT do the maintenance for all providers? If is the case is there any point moving to a new provider?
Advice on this would be very much appreciated.

Have you established what the fault is and where? If it's on their own equipment or internal wiring then BT are not responsible.
Have you retested using a corded handset from the BT test socket behind the master socket split faceplate?
If the fault is on the local loop then switching providers will make no difference whatsoever. It will be the same line maintained by BT OR regardless.

BT do operate a free priority fault repair scheme for certain people with chronic health problems. See http://www.bt.com/includingyou/assets/downloads/FreePriorityFaultRepair.pdf for details.

Also do you know if they were able to make 999 calls on it... as I am sure your BT rep will confirm, failing to repair a fault that was theirs to fix on a line where no 999 calls could be made is something the industry watchdog isn't very happy to hear about... 3 weeks would certainly not be seen as acceptable...

Many thanks for the replies. The phone was absolutely dead for the time it was inoperable.the line is now back in service.
I am applying for the Priority fault repair Scheme which I was not aware of previously.
Details of the outage have been passed to the BT rep who responded.
I am most grateful for the excellent advice.
