Thanks you two
I will never be without insecurities - who is - but definitely a whole lot more positive than in years gone by! There is a greater degree of acceptance, and with that comes a lot of freedom as weights are lifted from my shoulders.

Morning all. The sun has made an appearance again today so that is a good start!
Daily banking (yes, of course I still do it first thing) shows that all is still in order. I do, however, need to do a big grocery shop and prompted by Jamiedodger will do a meal plan beforehand. Between us we have lots of social things going on over the next few weeks - DD's birthday, planned trips out etc, so it can't be a rigid meal plan, more a case of basics in the cupboard such as pasta and tinned tomatoes, and easy stuff in the freezer. I am ashamed to admit that we even ran out of pasta this week - purely down to laziness and lack of organisation  Things like that will not do my envelope system any good as it inevitably leads to a "nip to the local shop and spend far too much" trip, or a "s*d it, grab a takeaway" trip
So, today's task will be to meal plan and do an online shop......simple, but I just have to do it!

Morning Hypno:)
I too have a big ish food shop today, I have started using the 2nd purse system so am hoping this will pay dividends in the long run. Have a good meal planning day xNovember NSD's - 70 -
Quick silly question, what is the 2nd purse system? Can we pretend that aeroplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars, cause I could really use a wish right now...0

I have a similar system - one current account specifically for "housekeeping" ie petrol and food, one current account which just contains enough to cover all the direct debits - mortgage, utilities, etc, and one current account which houses my "spends" for the month, from which the envelopes are filled.
It generally works quite well, and I would never return to just having one account to cover all three areas of spending - this way it is far easier to keep track of what is left, and to make sure that the occasional overspend is only compensated for by cutting back in the right area, not by leaving myself short in more important places.Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. KT - It is basically where you set a normal amount for your grocery budget for the month and you have a second purse which you pay into a set amount a week. You use the 2nd purse only for bargains and offers which have saved you money, then you buy them off yourself at full price and the money gets paid from your grocery budget money into your second purse.
I probably havent explained it that well, but the original post is by mothership is HERE post 2122November NSD's - 70 -
Ok lets see if I understand, so you pay for the bargains from the seperate purse. That part I get. Do you then add the difference (making it up to full price? So adding the saving back in) or just add the original price into the purse? I think I might be making this more complicated than it needs to be...
Sorry for the thread hijack Hypno...
With the redundancy etc, I am just looking for any tricks and tips to help dig me out of the mini hole I'm in before it becomes a hole I can't see over the top of.Can we pretend that aeroplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars, cause I could really use a wish right now...0 -
I will see if I can explain it better:
Every week you put £10 (or whatevery you can afford) in your second purse, so the same amount every week, continually.
You have your Grocery Challenge budget set to £250 (or whatever) for the month.
You go shopping and spend £50 of your budget on your normal shop. While there you see a fab bargain of your normal squash on 2 for £2.50 when it is usually £1.50 each!
You buy as many as you can afford/will use up before they go out of date/have room to store. You pay for this out of your 2nd purse. So say you buy 6 of them. You pay £7.50 out of your 2nd purse and you store them away when you get home.
Next week you go shopping and you have squash on your list, but you already have 6 in 'stock' so you go and do your normal shop leaving off the squash and end up spending £48.50 (as you didn't need to buy the squash) When you get home you 'buy' one bottle of squash from your stores for your usual £1.50 and pop in to your 2nd purse.
After 6 weeks, with buying squash every week from your stock, instead of the supermarket you will have paid £9 back into the 2nd purse. You have saved £1.50 in total
However.
On week two you have added another £10 to the 2nd purse, and you have noticed another good bargain! The same is then happening every week......
Eventually you will end up with all your 'savings' from each and every bargain in the 2nd purse.
Mothership recommends you keep a certain amount in the 2nd purse say £100 after it reaches more than that, you put it into a 3rd purse which you are free to spend on something special or pay off your debt, or whatever.
But what it does mean is that after a while you won't ever be paying full price for 90% of your shopping, you will be shopping more and more from your stores of bargain priced goods, eventually reducing your shopping bill at the supermarket, and the bonus being a big fat 3rd purse!
HTH and HUGE apologies to Hypno for highjacking!!!!November NSD's - 70 -
Did you hear that? It was the sound of a penny dropping... right into the second purse!
I understand now, thank you. I'm not sure my mental maths is that good, I'd need to set myself up a list on my phone to have with me or something... Might be worth a try though.
Sorry once more for the interruption Hypno! Can we pretend that aeroplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars, cause I could really use a wish right now...0
