    hi kim yoevil.
The gas meter is measured in metric units. The only original reading that i have is the one that the mortgage centre is claiming they took even though they are not sure who took it, very confusing.

ON OCTOBER 1ST 2010 THE READING WAS- 1584 Kwh
FEBUARY 18TH 2011 THE READING WAS- 2176 Kwh

TOTAL-592 Kwh in 20 weeks or 4 and half months

    Does this make any sense.

    Thankyou garry
When the meter records in metric units it means cubic metres of gas. So that's 592 cubic metres of gas you then need to convert that into kwh. You can use a multiplier of around 11.5 so that equals 6808 kwh of gas. Every week that'll be 340 kwh per week. Then you multiply it by the unit rate on the bill. Let's guess at 3.5p. So that's now £11.90 per week (quite a reasonable amount) then you need to add a standing charge of about £3 per week then add it all up then multiply by 20 weeks and you come close to a total that they asking for of £298. To check the figures you'll need a copy of the bill which you are within your rights to ask for.

Its not ilegal, it is perfectly legal for a landlord to resell gas or electric via submetering infact the council do it for my office. Ask the landlord when the meter was last colaborated, however not obliged to.
I noticed that you are an office so does that mean that you pay business rate gas or residential. also do you recieve a bill in your name?

If it is imperial then that is about 32 kWh per meter units. So 592 meter units is 19,000 kWh. That would cost about £550 (domestic prices) plus £30 to £80 in standing charges.

Of course if you are sub-metered to a business and you are not a business you have to check you are not being charged 20% VAT instead of 5%.

Sounds like you're a little confused with your meter for one thing. Gas meters cannot measure kWh, regardless of them being imperial or metric. They measure the volume of gas which has passed through, either in hundreds of cubic feet or cubic meters. You then need to use a fairly simple formula to convert the volume to kWh. If you can get to see an actual bill, you should see the formula used on it somewhere.

Can you make your mind up?-you said in post 10 that it's a metric meter.
Is it marked in cu ft or cu m?
A modern digital meter is most likely to be metric.

£15 per week over winter is quite normal. What exactly is the issue? A gas safety check was done in which faults were found and made safe. These things happen. The bill is not overly expensive. Many on here have had bills twice that but admittedly they have larger homes or are home longer than you are so for them your bill looks cheap. You said in your first message you didn't have any documentation or readings so you are contradicting yourself. If you have the paper work what is the unit rate that they are charging you and what standing charges are they applying to the account?
