I have a problem, do I repair or buy a new PC?
My PC is 2 years old, Pentium 4, 2 ghz, runs XP. For some time I have had problem with BS of D and freezing. I replaced the memory with 2 x 512 of ram (333mhz). The same problems happen. I have spoken to 2 local PC repairers and they are suggesting that my PC is not worth repairing! Trouble is, I have just bought the Ram and a new DVD writer. What should I do?

Your DVD writer will be compatible with your new machine so don't worry too much about that. RAM may be a different matter but you might get a bit back on eBay.
What have you done to track down the cause of the BSOD? You were correct to suspect RAM but that doesn't seem to be the issue. Have you tried running your PC without any peripherals attached? Sometimes these cause problems (for example, back in the day, Iomega devices were notorious for causing BSODs.) Make sure you have the latest drivers for all devices.
When you get a BSOD you should see at the top of the screen the name of the application which caused the BSOD. This may give a clue as to the source of the problem.0 -
You have nothing to loose, save all your important stuff somewhere and do a Format, If it works it's got to be cheaper than a new PC, a 2 yr old computer is too good to throw out. Alan.Every day when I wake up I thank the Lord I'm WELSH. .0

If I do a reformat, it might work but if I have a hardware problem, surely that would start the ball rolling all over again?0 -

It's an error message, Stop:0x0000008e or Stop:0x000000xa0 -
As mentioned above..do the format 1st & see if it resolves problem.
If it does you have saved the cost of repairs/new pc.
If it doesnt come back & we can help you through the problem :-)

Hi
If you've had your PC for two years, it's ready for a clean install of XP (imho).:cool:Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
try a good registry cleaner first, might just be a registry corruption

is a fully working 30 day trial, just run "1-click" maintenance when it is installedEx forum ambassador

I downloaded this and it found 14 registry problems, which the prog' fixed. Here's hoping.0 -
Still freezing and crashing. It looks as if I might have to reformat. Now, where did I put all those disks?0
