Before I change from ing does anyone have anything to say about Northern Rock good or bad, 5.46 (5.3 monthly) looks good to me.

there is already a long thread on this here. It's over the over 50's only, and they'll probably reduce the rate in a few months. My policies are based not on some economics theory, but on things I and millions like me were brought up with: an honest day's work for an honest day's pay; live within your means; put by a nest egg for a rainy day; pay your bills on time; support the police - Margaret Thatcher.0

so is that a good, bad or dont know, cant find the long thread on this forum lots of loans but not much on savings that are current. choice is icesave, northern rock or the indian bank. spoke to ing today sounds like they do not give a hoot for their customers their letter from all accounts implies they (the customers) will stick with them whatever the rate - whoops gone off the subject.

Northern Rock are good and easy to deal with but you have to watch their rates. They suck you in and then reduce the rate without any publicity0

The trouble is its Internet Accounts only!
Sorry I dont think the Internet is 100% safe!0 -
Wait a few weeks. Savings rates should increase in the first week of December following the BOE rate rise earlier this month. Pick the best of the bunch, once everyone's revealed their new rates.
If you won't need the money straight away, might want to check out bonds, e.g. the 1yr fixed rate bond from Birmingham Midshires, currently 5.62%, or Allied Irish I think at 5.85% or Coventry at 5.8% (if I remember correctly) but again may have another higher one in a couple of weeks.
Bonds are normally higher than your normal immediate access savings rates, and BOE may only raise rates once or twice more over the next 12 months. Bonds may rise once more in December, and then I personally will be throwing all my pennies at them !
Hope that helps !0 -
I missed the BOE rise. What is the rate now?0

BOE base rate now 5.00% up from 4.75%0

I need instant access for the next few years so anything fixed is not being looked at, ing are trying to fund their other businesses mortgages etc so they are pushing everyone towards fixed accounts I have narrowed it down to Northern Rock silver saver (yes I am that old) and icesave, have to make a decision by monday.

They are brilliant - especially if you were lucky enough to get the 500 free shares when they became a plc!Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
