Actually I always liked chilled fruit from the supermarket, until I grew my own blackberries and picked one off that was in the sun and all warm, I have never tasted anything so lush!

Bought some f&v at the market recently - big mistake as it went all rotten within 2 days.
  • All the market stalls roundabouts have gone over to selling everything by the £1 bowl. Whilst this can sometimes benefit, I dont often want 5 lemons or however many bananas, I also like to feel that I'm getting a reasonable price for the weight. Subsequently the market stalls have lost my custom.

I've been thinking that maybe I should go to the local indoor market to buy my fruit and veg rather than at the supermarket

Is it worth it? I mean both price wise and lasting length wise or is it cheaper at the supermarket??

Even better than the local marke, try out an organic store. I always buy only organic fruits and vegs and they have a better taste, let's not mention no chemicals in them:D
  • I think the question here that needs to be asked is why the food in supermarkets don't go off as quickly. Having worked for 2 supermarkets before, I have seen that the fruit and veg have to pass strict tests and go through quality control before it gets to the shelves. Plus the gases within the bags of salads, vegetables and fruit that is needed to keep them fresh. If you buy vegetables a few times a week it not only works out cheaper through less waste but it tastes better. Supermarkets are handy but for fruit and vegetables, I prefer to have it when I need it and support local people.

Supermarkets can't beat the quality and value of markets imo.

I regularly buy from my local market -

    2lbs Pink Lady apples, £1
    two mangoes, £1
2lb braeburn or granny smiths, £1
Melon or pineapple, 2 for £1.50
    12.5kg potatoes, £2.50

Even factoring in the cost of town centre parking makes the market cheaper than the tesco/sainsburys and morrisons I have locally. It's save me money at the gym too, hefting bags of fruit and veg back to the car is very toning.

I think that typically it is cheaper at the supermarket, but I don't think there is a big difference. I would compare prices at home though because your local market may actually be cheaper and definitely fresher!

Tbh I have always bought my fruit and veg from supermarkets, price is reasonable but quality is far better too. I find not all supermarkets have a large variety, some better than others. If I had a market nearby I guess I'd give it ago too but its just very convenient for me to buy everything from my local supermarket.

I buy from my local market, but soft fruits and heavy potatoes I get from the supermarket.

Was in the there yesterday and found on the cheap table 750 grammes of red potatoes 14p lovely roasties with some pork belly 250 grammes of broccoli 14p. the potatoes were odd sizes but washed cooked up a treat will produce me 3 meals. I have some cooked broccoli left but if a microwave a potato add broccoli and grated cheese to the mashed scooped out flesh and fry like a fishcake will taste great with many things .

my Sunday lunch cost me 75 pence
It's only rock and roll but I like it.
