Do you buy fruit and veg from supermarkets or markets?

I've been thinking that maybe I should go to the local indoor market to buy my fruit and veg rather than at the supermarket

Is it worth it? I mean both price wise and lasting length wise or is it cheaper at the supermarket??

Me too. I always forget about the indoor market and it's only ten mins walk away from me, but it's in the opposite direction from a busy shopping road and Asda. Yesterday I thought I'd try a greengrocers on the road, needed mushrooms and red peppers. All the red peppers had mould on them. Ended up putting the mushrooms back and getting my items from a supermarket.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

I usually get ours from the supermarket, when I've bought from the indoor market it's not as fresh, and there's not any real difference in cost.

I try to buy from our greengrocers in the town (who also have a market stall) as they are generally much cheaper than Mr T, but they don't always have the range of fruit and veg I want. The eggs are good though, free range and £1 a dozen.

I always get mine from morrisons as its the cheapest around, and it always lasts.
If morrisons wasnt near, i would get it from the market as i dont like the quality of fruit and veg form any other supermarket.
  • We buy ours from our local market which is only open three days a week so its always fresh. I find it much cheaper e.g. 8 apples for a quid, huge cauliflowers for a quid. They don't always have the huge range the supermarkets do but always have a few different items. I quite like that in a way as its enforced variety. As we buy loads on a Saturday I have to use some common sense about which things I use first (I find the strawberries only last a couple of days but the apples are good for a least a week) but hardly ever have to donate anything to the neighbours chickens.:D
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

  • I get mine either from the market or the mobile greengrocer who stops in my street once a week or direct from the grower. It all depends on which veg I need & what time of year it is. All are considerably cheaper & better quality than the supermarkets in this area. As to longevity things like potatoes, carrots, onions etc... will all last months (I don't buy washed veg as it shortens the storage life so drastically).

I get seasonal veg from the farm shop, and potatoes in 20kg sacks, but do get imported tomatoes from the supermarket until I can pick ours at home. The ones Mr T are selling at the moment are from Israel and Morocco, yuk yuk yuk, I don't want tomatoes that have been that far on a plane, but the family want fresh tomatoes so that's what they have to have. Most of the supermarket's tomatoes in summer are Dutch. Clementines and bananas are better quality in the supermarket and usually cheaper, the farm shop's are sometimes bigger but they've imported them anyway. I'll always buy locally grown food in season wherever possible, and we only have soft fruit as a blissful summer treat (we do grow a lot too). I would never buy Spanish strawberries and American blueberries and raspberries, nor American or French apples either, I buy apples all year but only ever British grown.

I don't have an indoor market near me, tbh I had never heard of one before now! But street markets I do like. I generally buy food to eat that day or straight away. I prefer street markets as I can
    1. Ask the vendor which is sweetest/where it comes from (and so know myself which is sweetest) 2. Get a better price on things especially berries
and 3. With the exception of apples get fruit which tastes ripe and not bruised or damaged. Supermarkets tend to win on that 70% of the time but only because I can pick carefully what I want to pay for, thats the only thing I can't do with a vendor.
-Oh and 4. I tend to get served far faster at a street market.

It is rare I get to shop at a street market though even though given the choice I'd prefer to. The reason for this is I tend to only have the time to shop when all the markets are closed (eg 11pm onwards).

Market every time. I like my fruit and veg fresh; not chilled to death from the Supermarket, and would like to say, supermarket tomatoes are absolute rubbish and taste like plastic!!

We're lucky to have 2 big fruit and veg stalls at our market, and one is self service so you can pick exactly what you want and how much.

Often even the big supermarkets have little choice.
