Hi folks,

I was on a fixed rate G&E tariff that ended at the end of Feb this year... I think quite a few of us on the forum were too...

Anyway after that ended I switched to E-On and this is still going through.

Anyway today I had a call from Scottish Power (or at least I think it was them) asking me to come back if they could beat my old tariff, fixed for three years, AND throw in three years free boiler and central heating cover, free annual service etc.

Has anyone else had a call like this?

It just seemed to me like they were asking a lot of questions. Obviously there is a lot of info being given on the phone but it made it feel like I was being sold to (if that makes sense... not pressure sales, just very quick...)

They said they send the paperwork out and I have 7 days to change my mind.... but I just keep thinking back to the dodgy sales people that turn up on your doorstep claiming to be your supplier when they aren't.

Hope this is genuine and someone else is having the same deal as it sounds like a great deal.... hope its not too good to be true.

They called the tariff Platinum 2014 which I can see on their website.

I think I would get them to send the paperwork on a no obligation basis so you can check it *before* cancelling the changeover. Otherwise who knows what might arrive after they cancel the switch...
  • Update - when I found the name of the tariff I went to U-Switch and did a comparison on this tariff and surprise surprise it is coming out a lot more than the tariff that I recently moved to with E-On... yet the guy said it would definitely be cheaper, would save me money and he checked and said my DD came out £37 against my old DD of £42....

I'm beginning to think I have been lied to in order to get me to stay with them... anyone got any thoughts?

    Hi Vuvuzela.

Yes when he was telling me all about it and it sounded too good to be true, I said to him "I would definately be interested in seeing the T&C's for it" and was told that they would take a verbal confirmation today on the phone if I wanted to go for it, but that they would send me the paperwork and I wouldn't be committed until 7 days after I get the paperwork. Thats the only reason I agreed to go for it... was no way I was signing up until I saw everything in black and white.

Well what a surprise! Do you really think that a cold-calling rep is going to admit that his suggested tariff (which will simply be the one on which he earns the most commission) is not the cheapest available?

  • Update again:

    Just comparing prices again:

My current tariff (E.on SaveOnline 5 Duel Fuel) VERSUS Scottish Power Platinum Fixed 2014.

    Gas
5.699p per KWh (5.428p excl. VAT) VERSUS 7.71p per KWh (7.34p excl. VAT)
2.917p per KWh (2.778p excl. VAT) above 2680 kWh p.a VERSUS 3.46p per KWh (3.29p excl. VAT) above 2680 kWh p.a

    Electricity
19.17p per KWh (18.26p excl. VAT) VERSUS 21.89p per KWh (20.85p excl. VAT)
10.25p per KWh (9.76p excl. VAT) above 900 kWh p.a VERSUS 9.80p per KWh (9.33p excl. VAT) above 900 kWh p.a

Thinking I have been well and truly conned and can't wait to see what Scottish Power Representative thinks about this....

Maybe I am naive but I would expect them to be honest.

He "guaranteed me this tariff would be cheaper than the one I moved to"...

I do a lot of sales in my job and I know what would happen if I lied to customers...

Only the other week someone was on here refusing to accept that SP were being economical with the truth when they said that his (standard) tariff was the cheapest that they could offer him. Of course ignoring the online discount tariffs that they couldn't offer home on the phone...
But why would you switch via a cold calling rep or doorstepper anyway, when you could use a comp site, get the genuinely best tariff, and then switch via a cashback site and keep the commission for yourself?

Technically it wasn't a cold calling rep... I am in the process of leaving them so they called to ask me to not leave... just like retentions when you cancel your mobile phone contract.

I already did the comparison sites when I left Scottish Power for E.On and I knew E.On were cheapest for me... so when he said he could guarantee to beat that deal, I knew it wasn't a tariff that I could access online as there were no cheaper deals... so I thought it was some "customer loyalty deal" that had extra discount on.

They don't personalise tariffs in that way, it would be administratively impossible.
