    I've checked the monitor via another pc and that works fine.

    After turning the monitor on, it's little standby light flashes (waiting for a signal from the pc)

    I turn on the pc, the cooling fan powers up and the power lights illuminate on the dvd drive. The dvd drive fires up and you can hear it making a noise as though it's"trying to read".

    The computer remains in this state, nothing appears on the monitor and the monitors standby light remains flashing, so theres obviously no signal being provided from the pc. It's not getting to the boot screen.

    Do you have a dedicated graphics card in the PC, or is the monitor just using the integrated graphics card?

    Other basic troubleshooting:

    1/ Unplug the PC or set the switch at the back to off, then hold down the power button on the front for at least 30 seconds. Afterwards, power up and see if this helps;
    2/ Clear the CMOS (some have jumpers, others you have to gently remove the CMOS battery), then retest;

    3/ If they don't help, then try eliminating other causes by running a very bare computer. With the PC unplugged disconnect power to all unnecessary pieces of hardware such as DVD drive & hard drive; remove any PCI cards, etc (place on anti static bags preferably); disconnect all peripherals like keyboards, mice; remove all but one of the sticks of RAM.

    Basically you want to turn the computer on with ideally just the motherboard, CPU, a single stick of ram, and the monitor. Power it on, and if you don't get a picture then turn it back off and unplug it again - then swap the ram for another stick, and repeat the process. Keep doing this for each stick of ram you have.

    If you DO get a signal to the monitor, then power it off, add another SINGLE piece of hardware in and then plug the computer in and power it up again. Keep repeating this process until you find what hardware is faulty.

    If you DON'T ever get a signal, then it's probably the motherboard that is fried, and you'll likely need a new motherboard. In this case, feel free to start a new topic (e.g. "Is my motherboard fried?") if you want to attract second opinions.

    In all steps, never do anything that you don't think you can undo. Take pictures if you like so you remember where things go. Don't touch inside the computer unless the switch is off at the back, or it is unplugged. Use anti-static precautions, etc.

    thanks for your advice. It looks like the motherboard's fried. I get nothing even with just the very basics:mad:

    Fair enough, well at least you know! Btw, did you clear the bios as in step 2? You'd have to research or check the manual for your particular board.

    Also, did you get any system beeps? If so, you can match them to your bios type below:

    I think I cleared the bios. It had a jumper for normal and clear bios. I swapped it over & then retried with it back to normal, but nothing. I don't get anything, no bleeps at all (only expleatives from me, when it still doesn't fire up)
