I've just been on the net using my main pc, and it went loopy. It has opened numerous windows saying I have been infected with a virus and windows system tools will scan the system for infected items. I closed the windows and shut down the computer. However I can't get it to boot up again now,it is trying to read from the dvd drive (even though it is empty) and wont do anything else.
I have heard about the system virus. What does this do? and is it likey this is what I've been infected with? I'm not to certain what happended it was so quick when the windows appeared. My antivirus/malware software didn't give any alerts and neither have previous scans.
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reboot and keep pressing F8 to get into 'SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING'
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
If anything was found then do the exact same but run a FULL scan
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin):idea:0 -
Are you able to boot into safe mode with F8 as above? If so, follow Rik's instructions.
If not, do you know how to burn a CD using an .ISO image? And do you have access to a burner?
If so, try make a boot CD using the Avira Rescue Disc:
http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-avira-antivir-rescue-system
Or the Dr Web LiveCD
http://download.geo.drweb.com/pub/drweb/livecd/
I don't know what you are using currently to access the internet and write on this forum, but hopefully it's a laptop and not a netbook
and boot the infected computer using one. Best to have a network cable connecting your computer to the modem, so they can update once loaded.0 -
aliEnRIK, Im unable to boot to mode, it doesn't get passed the dvd drive firing up after powering up.
RussJK, I will try a rescue disk. I am using a netbook, butI do have a dvd burner for it.My £2 savings total for 2007 = £92, for 2008 = £124

Go into BIOS and put the harddrive down to boot first, take the dvd drive out of the sequence completely:idea:0

I've just made a rescue disc, but no joy. It still won't boot up. After pressing the power button the dvd drive start wirring and you can hear it "trying to read", but nothing else. The screen doesn't start up or get to the initial boot screen. It's as though its not getting to the boot up...My £2 savings total for 2007 = £92, for 2008 = £124

When you made the rescue disk, did you do an option like "write CD from image", or did you just copy the file over? It won't be bootable if you just have a CD with the file you downloaded sitting on it. If you don't understand the difference, let me know and I can provide a guide.
When you start the computer, do you get black screen with white text? Because that's the initial boot screen - if you aren't getting that screen, then that's a hardware problem.
Edit: here is a youtube video I found which walks you through changing the boot order for CD / Hard drive, and so on. It won't be an EXACT guide, it'll just give you an idea.

depends on the computer. it should flash onscreen before loading windows
many computers use the 'DEL' key to get BIOS up (F2 seems to be the other main one):idea:0 -

thanks for the quick reply folks. I don't get the above. So it looking like its a hardware problem and coincidental with the onscreen activity.
I'm off to work now, so no more time to look at things today.
(At least it's a short shift with the clocks going forward;))
Will it mean a new motherboard required or worse in your opinions? My £2 savings total for 2007 = £92, for 2008 = £124

You'll have to describe what you see on the monitor when you turn on the computer in this case.
Also check the obvious, that the connection to the monitor works, that the monitor is powered, etc. You can even put the monitor on the laptop in order to confirm that the monitor isn't broken.0
