It seems like the latter has a huge advantage over the former.
How about in your place?
2011 and beyond is the time of sucking up me thinks.

!!! kissing can be a necessary evil, as long as there is something to !!! kiss about, I don't mind giving compliments. Had an ex MD whose only want was having his ego stroked, but he was a nasty man who didn't do anything, at all. Played solitaire all day on his laptop. You were kind of left with attempting to express your gratitude for his very existence on this planet. It was monumentally bad as pumping up his ego would get him to leave you alone for a while, but with an inflated ego he was also twice as insufferable.
People with this massive egos plus insecurity and need for approval often get so deluded that they walk into the worst situations and get a cold hard dose of reality at some point. Til then. keep as far away from them as you can, they are parasites and bullies.0 -

Of course it has....it's all about appearance.
Are you completely dim or what?
Perhaps if you spent your time more wisely than starting thread after thread on here; you might get yourself noticed at work.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
No are you?
I've outperformed everyone in my team and I know how good I am. Performance doesn't mean tosh these days.
It's all about who you know and how good you can lick their batty hence why we have people in our place getting paid £50K per annum playing Solitaire (secretly) without realizing that everything is being reflected on the glass pane behind them.
You're a corrupt HR person anyway. Your response doesn't surprise me. Keep licking away sunny jim.0 -
There is a second issue here, performing well and exceeding those targets, in fact bringing in an entirely new profitable income stream as I did makes the boss look bad, threatening his position and in my case I fully exposed his fraudulence and stupidity, I put up with too much and finally said no to taking the humiliation of stroking his ego and the !!!!!footing about his awful childish 'decision making'.
He started bleating about how clients treated me so well and how do you get all this business the week before he fired me. So jealous and petulant.
I have spoken to a few people about this, and your success making other people look bad seems to be a larger concern now than an !!! licking culture. A friend of mine at the moment wants to go the extra mile for her employer, but has decided not to for fear of this and the ensuing politics.
I have worked in a company where stupid politics of this nature does not happen, so it is achievable and there is hope. Excellent management is required and a proper structure of command.0 -

Welcome to the real world and not a moment to soon I might add. If you know the right people everything lands in your lap. We call it nepotism, not !!! kissin. If you ever wondered how the Houses of Parliament works or not as in actual work, now you know.

Most deffinatly, where i work its is all very much if your face fits (unfortunatly mine does not). i dont enjoy brown tonguing and will not do it on principle.be who you are and say what you feel.
because those who mind dont matter,
and those who matter dont mind.

I don't think that the odd bit of brown nosing hurts but you'll never catch me doing it, i think those who get on through brown nosing are the lowest of the low.0

Ar*se licking combined with a good dose of bullsh*t is the way to go.

Networking with upper echelons if you want to get ahead is a neccessary evil. It's not brown-nosing as such - just being amenable and friendly with those who matter. I know people who are excellent at their jobs and very hardworking who are overlooked for promotions and pay rises because they don't 'play the game'. My DH is one of these and I'm always trying to get him to see this is why he doesn't move up.I'll have some cheese please, bob.0
