£706 compensation from KLM! (Dec snow)

We had been booked to fly a KLM flight (operated by Delta) from NYC to Heathrow on the 19th of December, which was cancelled due to the snow. We eventually arrived back on the 23rd.

I wrote to KLM upon our return not expecting to hear back but finally did in February. They stated they had no obligation to compensate us but would consider a goodwill gesture if we sent receipts in, which I did. This covered 4 nights in a hotel and most of our meals and I just logged onto my internet banking to find a nice little surprise!

I am very pleased and if anyone else was similarly affected, get your claim in! :j

They are correct in saying no compensation is due (compensation would be a payment over and above costs for hotel, food etc., in cases where the airline is responsible for the delay or cancellation). However, they are still responsible for your care even if the reason for the delay is beyond their control (although they understandably don't like this because of the cost involved) and this specifically includes accommodation (and transport there), food, drinks, phone calls.

Did they arrange for your hotel at the time? Or are they now re-imbursing you for your documented cost?
