Hi all, no idea if this is the right place, but couldn't find anywhere more appropriate.

So, it is my MIL's 60th birthday next week and we would like to take her and some family out for a meal (we're not paying for everyone though, thank goodness!) and are trying to find a nice place to eat. I am thinking a carvery or similar as MIL is a bit funny about foreign foods. Doesn't like Italian (too much sauce), chinese (only has the chicken and mushroom, no idea what the sauce is), Indian (too spicy) etc. We live in Yorkshire and my OH hasn't lived in Wolverhampton for many years now and looking on the net isn't really bringing anything inspiring up. We want somewhere not too expensive, say up to £20 per person.

Can anyone suggest anywhere? She lives in Goldthorn Hill/Penn if that helps at all.

Ta!

Hi, I used to live in Oldbury area, what about checking out any Harvester's or Toby Carvery Restaurants.
Not sure ref Wolverhampton - What about coming into dudley? Used to go to a lovely Poacher's Pocket for meals. Think tha might be in Gornal area!
depends on how many are going, is any1 driving, or will it be a shared taxi/minibus so you can all drink.

  • Walsall is not too far away and there is a lovely cavery there for sundays in Barons Court Hotel nr Walsall Wood. It is £9.95 for 2 courses and coffee with mints (starter and main) and you can choose to pay for desert if needed. The starters are soup or buffet style things like prawns, melon, carved ham, pate salads etc which are lovely, gives you a chance to try all little bits of starters when you would normally only have one. then the mains are a choice of 3 roast meats and all the trimmings.
The setting is very posh, nice atmospher and a great service.
I used to live local and would go here when my parents were down, we have since moved but last weekend we called in when we were driving back from a wedding down south and it is still wonderful now. Booking is required tho and the cavery is only availabel on sundays. Hope this helps :)

There's a couple of Toby carvery's near, so at least you know what you're getting, there's one at Burnt Tree in Dudley, and the other is on the Tettenhall Road.

As far as Harvesters go then again there's one on the Tettenhall Road further on than the Toby, towards Codsall, and the other is at Kingswinford.

The Goldthorn Hotel is now part of the Quality Hotel chain, and I presume they do meals, but I have no experience of them.

Thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately MIL has decided to go to the local pub, mmmh chicken and chips (not!). Not exactly what I had in mind but its her birthday. I have said to my partner that there better be a no smoking section as our dd is coming. I was looking forward to getting dolled up as well. Maybe we can use your suggestions another time.

Modgit, we couldn't go to the Goldthorn hotel as that's where she works!!

Have a nice evening, oh and by the way - how will the bill be paid?

There was a thread a while ago ref splitting the bill - make sure you know who's paying for what and dont be stung by other people's greed.
i.e you have a burger and pay for some else's steak or you drink water, but end up paying for all the wine which has been drunk!

Just some advice so there wont be no family squabble's etc.
