Last minue flight to anywhere

At some point this summer I'd like to take 1-2 weeks off and fly somewhere. What I was hoping to do was to go to the airport (probably Heathrow) and buy the first cheap ticket I could find and get on the plane (assuming I won't require a visa for entry into that country).

Is this viable, has anyone done this?
Seeing as the flight would leave virtually immediately, would I be able to get tickets really cheap or would the ticket still have the "last minute" premium, i.e. be more expensive than if I booked it 1-2 months in advance?

the days of cheap last minute seats on planes are gone. These you used to find sometimes on charter flights where the seats had already been paid for by the tour operator and getting something back was better than nothing. You mention going to Heathrow which means scheduled flights and last minute means paying top whack.

The whole airline travel industry has changed. The bargains are for the early bookers. Yonks back, I did the flights that you are on about....there were even bucket-shops at the airport and peeps awaiting last-minute deals.

All gone now. Like ice-cream sellers on bicycles, 45rpm records and white dog sh*te.

    Sorry

  • Thanks for the replies.

Disappointing, so there is no scope for being spontaneous on the cheap any more? Oh well... I guess I'll have to plan it out.

Your next best bet is going to http://www.skyscanner.net/ and selecting your departure airport as Heathrow and your destination airport as "everywhere". That should give you an idea of some destinations at a price you can afford..
