Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981, it is illegal to uproot any wild plant without permission from the landowner or occupier. Uproot is defined as to ‘dig up or otherwise remove the plant from the land on which it is growing’, whether or not it actually has roots; and, for the purposes of the legislation, the term ‘plant’ includes algae, lichens and fungi as well the true plants – mosses, liverworts and vascular plants.

The Stautue in Northern Ireland is listed as

The Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985
    and
The Nature Conservation and Amenity Lands (Northern Ireland) Order 1985

I didn't realise there were so many "angry" people out there- i thought it would be more 50/50!

I believe it is. They were planted for everyone to enjoy & not to pinch and take home.

I don't think anyone is actually angry unless you are asking retrospectively.
  • my son was out playing last weekend, the kid he was out with picked a huge bunch and gave some to me and to his mum.....given that they had already been picked, I put them in a vase, but had a long chat with said kid, explaining why we should really leave flowers there for everyone to enjoy.

He thought he had done something nice.......its a fine balance to praise him for the nice thought of wanting to give something nice to his mum, whilst instilling the community values. I was secretly quite pleased when my own son said he hadnt picked any as he thought it wasn't right.

Don't pick them. If everyone picked one or two, there would be none left for everyone to look at. I also think you need to let them die down naturally or they don't flower so well the next year. It's about returning energy to the bulb (I think?)

I'm angry at the thought that anyone would be so stupid as to think that such an anti-social act would be OK.

How would they like it if someone came and picked a few from their gardens (or window-boxes)?
