Boiler leak....central heating pressure drop!

Options
Hi all,

Have a Worcester Bosch 30 CDi condensing combi...installed ~20months ago by approved installer (so still under warranty).

I've noticed the last couple of months that the pressure seems to be dropping from the normal 1 bar and air seems to get in and accumulate in the highest radiator (bathroom).

So, !!!!!! a leak I thought allowing air to get in....!!!!.

Then have recently noticed a puddle of water beneath my boiler! It appears on first inspection to be coming fromt he joint of the condensate wast line from the boiler to the condensate waste pipe going through the wall...

Could a leak in this place cause a drop in the central heating system pressure?

Going to investigate more tonight to check location of leak is certaina nd not furtehr up and just happening to appear to accumulate here..

Any thoughts appreciated!

No, because the condensate drain is not part of the pressurised side of the system.
You appear to have 2 separate issues.
Fixing a leak in the condensate pipe shoud be simple enough.
When you repressurise, does it eventually drop down again below 1 bar.
Are you sure that you are looking at the condensate drain, and not the pressure relief valve overflow? If the latter is leaking then that would explain the pressure drop.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Hard to tell exactly where the leak is at the moment - will take the cover off tonight to check....

But upon inspection from underneath, it looked as though the joint of the condensate waste boiler pipe to waste pipe.

Definitely not PRV waste line - is the other side of the boiler (RHS).

In which order are you noticing the drop in pressure and the air in the highest radiator?

Are you bleeding the rad, then noticing a drop? How many times have you had to bleed it?

I know when I completely emptied mine and added some new rads to it last year, it took 5 or 6 further mini bleeds of the top rad, before I got all of the air from the system and it stabalised. After each bleed I had to to it up.

I suspect it took time for all the air trapped to find its way to the highest rad. I checked and I certainly had no leak and it's been stable since.

You need to establish if it's losing presure of its own accord before you can make the assumption that there's a leak.

If ts still under warranty for both materials and workmanship why are you a) faffing with it and b) spending your time on here instead of contacting the installer and inviting him around to investigate? Sorry to be blunt.

are you gas safe registered to remove the boiler case?

as soon as i remove the case i am deemed to have 'worked on it' and need to carry out safety checks etc. Why are you any different?

Genuine question because I don't know - do you have to be registered to work on your own property?

Shouldn't even come into the equation in this context. My earlier post on this thread - rinse and repeat.

Usual story though - hare set running and then OP disappears for (thus far) 4 days. Can't be that important then. :)

just irritates me how blind some people are to their families safety when they think they are qualified to 'tinker' with the boiler.

especially when some boiler cases are actually part of the combustion seal and can easily be broken without realising

especially when - as in this case- it seems that they don't need to.

    Indeed.

No but you do have to be competant.
